Randleman became the outright regular-season champion in Piedmont Athletic Conference volleyball with a little help last week. The Tigers (17-3 overall, 11-1 PAC) finished with a one-match edge on Uwharrie Charter Academy Southwestern Randolph nipped visiting UCA 25-21, 17-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-11 in Thursday night’s regular-season finale, knocking the Eagles from a share of the title. There are tweaks to locations for Randolph County early voters ASHEBORO – Early voting begins this week for the Nov. 5 general election. The early voting window runs from Oct. 17-Nov. 2, with the exception of Oct. 20. Voting times are 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays; and 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27. Sportsplex draws teams to Asheboro for tourneys

ASHEBORO – The second of two major youth tournaments at Zoo City Sportsplex is slated for this weekend. City officials said that there could be thousands of visitors to Asheboro, particularly on Zoo Parkway and surrounding areas. On Saturday and Sunday, the Carolina Pumpkin Classic for lacrosse is slated. This competition includes boys’ and girls’ teams in the 9-and-under through 14-and-under age divisions. Cortes, a senior forward, entered this week with a share of the team’s scoring lead with 11 goals. The Patriots snapped a four-game losing streak by winning 6-4 last week at Eastern Randolph, with Cortes scoring one of the goals in the Piedmont Athletic Conference game. Football and soccer state playoffs will be delayed for up to a week for North Carolina High School Athletic Association teams among a list of postseason adjustments announced Wednesday in the wake of Hurricane Helene causing upheaval for teams in the western part of the state. ASHEBORO – Randolph County has taken a big step toward the construction of a new elementary school as the Randolph County Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of land for the new Liberty Elementary School.
