Team members and fans of the Southwestern Randolph Middle School boys’ basketball team enjoyed the outcome of the Randolph County championships Saturday at Providence Grove High School. They contributed to a spirited atmosphere. The Southwestern Randolph Middle School team coached by Benji Cole defeated Northeastern Randolph Middle School 45-29 in the title game. Randleman, boys’ basketball Price has been one of the main forces behind Randleman’s strong season. The Tigers entered the week with a 14-4 record, just one victory away from last season’s win total and in position to improve from last season’s fourth-place spot in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. Price, a guard, is the only senior among the main rotation of players for the Tigers. He’s averaging 13.5 points per game, ranking second on the team. Defending Class 1-A state champion Uwharrie Charter Academy and undefeated Class 2-A team Trinity held up their ends to begin the wrestling dual team state playoffs. They're tops-seeded teams and looked the part when those competitions began Saturday with two rounds on their respective home mats. UCA and Trinity advanced to this week’s third round, which is set for Wednesday. Winners in the third round meet against in regional finals later Wednesday. Wheatmore, girls’ swimming Hall was part of victories in four events as the Warriors won last week’s Piedmont Athletic Conference championships. She won the 100-meter butterfly, 100 backstroke and took part in two first-place relays in competition at High Point Swim Club. Her backstroke time of 1 minute, 21.72 seconds reflected nearly a 17-second winning margin. Wheatmore was the clear team winner with 84 points to 54 for second-place Providence Grove among the five teams that were entered.
