ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Caroline Wright

Providence Grove  |  girls’ golf Wright secured Player of the Year honors in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. She was the season-long champion in the conference.  In last week’s final PAC match, Providence Grove emerged as the team champion with a 35-shot edge on runner-up Eastern Randolph at Siler City Country Club. Trinity was the third-place team, followed by Randleman and Wheatmore. Wright will be among the entrants in next week’s Class 1-A/2-A Central Regional at Stonebridge Golf Club in Monroe.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Dacia Lowery

Uwharrie Charter Academy  |  volleyball Lowery played a role as the Eagles won two matches last week to stay in contention for the top spot in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. Lowery had 16 kills, and five blocks as UCA topped visiting Providence Grove 21-25, 25-15, 25-21, 13-25, 15-9. That was followed by UCA’s 24-26, 25-18, 25-22, 25-23 victory at Trinity when Lowery provided 11 kills and five blocks. Entering this month with two weeks in the regular season remaining, UCA held an 11-3 overall record and 6-2 PAC mark.

 Southwestern Randolph  |  volleyball   Smith helped Southwestern Randolph to two more Piedmont Athletic Conference victories last week, including in a showdown with Uwharrie Charter Academy. She supplied 20 kills, 14 digs, and three blocks in the four-set victory at UCA in a rematch of last year’s conference tournament final. Others to turn in big numbers for the Cougars in that match were Gracie Hodgin, Riley Key, Raegan LeRoy, Coley Shiflet, and Carleigh Whitson.  Wheatmore  |  boys’ soccer   Queen has been an offensive force early in the season as the Warriors have been on a tear. A senior forward, Queen has 12 goals and four assists in nine games. That helped the Warriors to a 6-0-3 start. Queen scored Wheatmore’s only goal in last week’s 1-1 overtime tie at home with rival Trinity in a Piedmont Athletic Conference game. Madison Burgiss  | Trinity, volleyball Burgiss, a senior setter, has been a steady contributor as Trinity has gone on a good stretch early in the season. She helped the Bulldogs to three victories last week. It began when the Bulldogs avenged a loss to Asheboro by winning in three sets at home as Burgiss provided 28 assists. Burgiss recorded 31 assists as the Bulldogs swept Southern Guilford and then posted 21 assists in a three-set sweep of High Point Central. Southwestern Randolph, football/wrestling  Sugg was an all-Piedmont Athletic Conference lineman for the Cougars, who had their best football season in school history last fall. He was a senior. Sugg was also an all-conference performer in wrestling. He racked up a 32-8 record, concluding by winning his final five matches on the way to a third-place finish in Class 2-A in the state tournament at 195 pounds. Trinity  |  boys’ track and field Vickers was productive in his senior season for the Bulldogs, who he helped to the Piedmont Athletic Conference title. In the PAC championships, he was part of three point-producing events for Trinity. He placed second in the 400 meters in 58.63 seconds and took third in the triple jump at 35 feet, 1½ inches. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Maggie Lowe

Southwestern Randolph  |  girls’ soccer Lowe scored 27 goals across 22 games to pace the Cougars in that category. Lowe also finished her senior season with seven assists for the third-most total on the team. The Cougars posted a 14-7-1 record. That was the team’s most victories since 2017. Lowe landed a spot on the All-Piedmont Conference team following the previous season’s selection for the 2021 All-Mid-Piedmont Conference team when Southwestern Randolph competed in a Class 3-A league. Lowe had a team-best six goals in the shortened 2021 season, with the Cougars playing ten games.
