ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jack McArthur

Uwharrie Charter Academy, wrestling McArthur continues to rack up victories during his senior season on the mats. He has been a regular qualifier for the state tournament during his career with the Eagles. He has moved up to the middle weights, often competing at 138 pounds. UCA is coming off another big week in duals. First, there was a 72-6 victory against Eastern Randolph in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. Then in a two-day home dual-meet event, the Eagles defeated Cary 53-18, Greensboro Grimsley 47-18, New Bern 49-21, North Rowan 78-6, Northern Guilford 58-15, Pisgah 40-33 and Western Harnett 78-6. ‌

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Kynnedi Routh

 Wheatmore, girls’ basketball ‌Routh has been a contributor for Wheatmore during what has been a bounce-back season for the Warriors. Wheatmore placed third in the Ledford Christmas Tournament last week. Routh, a junior, has been among the consistent scorers for the Warriors, who’ve had a relatively balanced attack. In the tournament, Wheatmore won 51-26 vs. host Ledford before falling 51-41 to East Davidson. The Warriors capped their tournament participation by defeating West Davidson 53-32. With a 9-4 record entering January, the Warriors have matched last season’s win total. Routh also played on the school’s volleyball team.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Brandon Campbell

 Trinity, boys’ basketball Campbell has been a solid player for the Bulldogs, averaging in double-figure points this season. He was slightly above 10 points per game last season. The senior forward has been a good complement for high-scoring teammate Dominic Payne. His ability to produce offensively has given Trinity some versatility. Campbell is a two-time All-PAC selection in basketball. Campbell has been an all-conference choice in track and field as well. On the football team, he was one of the Bulldogs’ top receivers along with among the leading tackers on defense as a linebacker. ‌

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Brooke Ingram

Providence Grove, girls’ basketball ‌Ingram had a 25-point outing when Providence Grove won its Piedmont Athletic Conference opener by defeating visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy last week. That continues a nice trend for the Patriots, who held a 6-2 overall record through the end of last week. With that, it meant that Providence Grove had matched the team’s win total for the entire 2022-23 season. Ingram, a senior guard, entered this week with a team-leading 13.3 points per game – or about twice her average for last season. She also had provided 2.4 assists per game. This is her fourth season…

Southwestern Randolph, boys’ basketball It has been a challenging start to the season for Southwestern Randolph, but Robertson has given the Cougars chances in games. Last week, the senior had games of 24 points and 19 points. Still, the Cougars absorbed a pair of narrow home losses on consecutive nights to South Davidson (by 42-40) and East Davidson (by 55-52). Robertson is coming off football season when he was a receiver for the Cougars.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Audra Petty

Randleman, girls’ basketball Petty is one of the returning players for the Tigers, who had a strong senior class last season. She has been up the task. Petty, a senior guard, posted 24 points against Asheboro and 27 points against Ledford in a pair of games last week. In Randleman’s first three games, Petty has averaged 26.3 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds. She also was credited with 2.7 steals per game. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jerquarius Stanback

Asheboro, boys basketball ‌Stanback was one of the leading players for the Blue Comets during their conference championship campaign from last season. He has started this season with a series of strong outings for Asheboro. The senior post player has scored 26, 25 and 29 points in three victories for the Blue Comets. Beginning this week, Asheboro plays its next six opponents against Randolph County teams prior to a holiday tournament.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Nicah Taylor

Eastern Randolph, football Taylor has been one of the main playmakers for the Wildcats during their Piedmont Athletic Conference championship season. Taylor is a receiver who has been one of the primary targets for quarterback Carter Revelle, who has thrown for 30 touchdowns. The Wildcats (12-1) have won three games in the Class 1-A state playoffs at home. Next is Friday night’s West Region semifinal at Mount Airy. Taylor also was a key player on Eastern Randolph’s state finalist boys’ basketball team during the last school year.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Edison Hernandez

Randleman, football The senior running back ran for more than 1,000 yards for the Tigers. He was a big contributor to a high-powered offense. Hernandez reached the 100-yard mark on the ground in half of the team’s 12 games. He scored touchdowns on 13 rushes. Hernandez was the man running threat for the Tigers with no other player on the team reaching the 200-yard mark for the season. Randleman finished the season with a 10-2 record.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Coley Shiflet

Southwestern Randolph, volleyball Shiflet’s splendid volleyball career for the Cougars wrapped up during the weekend. She has been part of conference championships during her time with Southwestern Randolph. She also played a role for the Cougars when they won the Class 2-A state championship in 2021. She was Most Valuable Player of the championship match as a sophomore. Shiflet excelled around the court, but she perhaps made her biggest impact as a defensive specialist. She has committed to play collegiately for Houston.
