SOPHIA – Track champions were determined Saturday night in the regular-season finale at Caraway Speedway. Only one of the season-long champions actually won the last race in his respective division. Here’s a look at how it unfolded: In Late Models, Coy Beard secured his second track championship in three seasons after driving Donnie Apple’s No. 8 car to a second-place finish. SOPHIA – Championship night has nearly arrived at Caraway Speedway. Track champions will be determined Saturday night at the speedway. After some weather-related cancelations involving scheduled race nights at the track, this should be a busy regular-season finale. Races are set for Late Models (60 laps), Modifieds (35), Challengers (35), Mini Stocks (20), UCARs (15), Legacy (25), Bootleggers (10) and Enduro (10). Some classes haven’t raced since August at the track. Fall league approaches for area high schools ASHEBORO – The annual fall baseball league that involves teams representing high schools around the region is set to begin next week at McCrary Park. Seven teams will participate, representing Asheboro, Uwharrie Charter Academy, Chatham Central, Jordan-Matthews, Lee County, Montgomery Central and North Moore. There are two games on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., with one game Thursday at 6 p.m. Each team will play two games per week. He’ll join Wayne “Speedy” Thomas, Ronald Fox, Banner Shelton and Archie Adams, Sr. in the Wall of Fame’s Class of 2022. Bob Labonte is the father of NASCAR Cup champions Terry Labonte and Bobby Labonte and grandfather of Justin Labonte. Bob Labonte was born in 1933 in Rumford, Maine and turned 89 this year. ASHEBORO – Neel Ladde of Charlotte won the Junior Amateur golf tournament during the weekend at Asheboro Municipal Golf Course. Ladde posted a total of 107 for 27 holes in the tournament that was reduced because of weather interfering. He had rounds of 36 and 71. Second place went to Lexington’s Steele Fischer (38-78) with 116 and third place went to Eastern Randolph rising senior Connor Carter (41-76) with 117. In the Challenger division, Fletcher Whaley was the first-race winner after Nathan Bess, who was first to cross the line, was disqualified via a postrace inspection.
