Prep football: Eastern Randolph, Randleman roll in first round

It worked out well for a couple of Randolph County football teams playing home games Friday night when the state playoffs began. Not so much for teams going on the road. Eastern Randolph and Randleman were the lone county teams to keep their seasons alive. Here’s a look: Eastern Randolph 68, Cherryville 7: In Class 1-A at Ramseur, the third-seeded Wildcats cruised against the No. 30 seed. Eastern Randolph (10-1) has won 10 consecutive games. Two of the five Piedmont Athletic Conference football teams reaching the state playoffs will begin with home games. Eastern Randolph (9-1) is the No. 3 seed in the Class 1-A West Region, set for a home game with No. 30 seed Cherryville (2-8). The Wildcats won the PAC for the third year in a row by edging host Randleman 22-21 on Friday night. Wheatmore, girls’ soccer Walls, a forward and midfielder, was one of the seniors on the Warriors’ state runner-up team. Walls was the fourth-leading scorer on an offensive powerhouse. She cranked out 11 goals and provided five assists. She also occasionally took corner kicks for the Warriors. Walls was honored by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association with a Sportsmanship Award prior to the Class 2-A title game this month at UNC Greensboro Soccer Stadium.
