ASHEBORO – It was quite a week for Asheboro’s boys’ basketball team. The Blue Comets topped a strong in-county team to wrap up non-conference play and then won its Mid-Piedmont Conference opener. It all added up to a 10-game winning streak entering this week. Asheboro defeated visiting Eastern Randolph 80-75 in a highly anticipated matchup behind Jerquarius Stanback’s 26 points and David Rodriguez’s 25 points. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Nicah Taylor

Eastern Randolph, football Taylor has been one of the main playmakers for the Wildcats during their Piedmont Athletic Conference championship season. Taylor is a receiver who has been one of the primary targets for quarterback Carter Revelle, who has thrown for 30 touchdowns. The Wildcats (12-1) have won three games in the Class 1-A state playoffs at home. Next is Friday night’s West Region semifinal at Mount Airy. Taylor also was a key player on Eastern Randolph’s state finalist boys’ basketball team during the last school year.

RANDLEMAN – Carter Revelle threw 39 yards to Nicah Taylor for a third-quarter touchdown in a 22-21 victory against previously undefeated Randleman on Friday night in the regular-season finale to determine the Piedmont Athletic Conference championship. RANDLEMAN – John Kirkpatrick threw five of his six touchdown passes in the first half as Randleman blew out visiting Providence Grove 42-14 on Friday night in a Piedmont Athletic Conference football game. Tyshaun Goldston made five of the touchdown catches. Those plays covered 50, 33, 34, 41 and 20 yards. Kirkpatrick threw for 218 yards, completing 13 of 22 passes.
