(Randolph Record file photo) TRINITY – Tim Kelly really is ready to step away from coaching high school basketball this time. Kelly, the longtime coach at Trinity, has retired as the boys’ coach. Kelly spent 34 seasons as Trinity’s coach. That time has included 673 victories and the 2004 Class 3A state championship. Asheboro’s Stanback to miss N.C. East-West All-Star Game

ASHEBORO – Jerquarius Stanback of Asheboro won’t play in next week’s North Carolina East-West All-Star Game because of an injury stemming from late in the basketball season. Stanback, an Appalachian State signee, is dealing with a wrist injury that might require surgery, Asheboro coach Brian Nance said. “He fell in that playoff game and just landed on it,” Nance said. “There’s something in the wrist.” Stanback was injured in a violent tumble during a first-round game of the Class 3A state playoffs vs. visiting Carson. He suffered a concussion and other ailments and missed Asheboro’s second-round loss to Asheville Reynolds.…

New coach Scott Tyson sees Randleman girls’ basketball job as ideal

So he’s back in a coaching capacity after he was hired as the third coach in three years for the Tigers. “It’s really the tradition that Coach (Brandon) Varner started and Coach (Steve) Rightmyer continued last year,” Tyson said. Juke Harris, a Wake Forest signee, poured in 34 points for Salisbury, which won its 20th consecutive game. Sixth-seeded Randleman (23-6), the regular-season and tournament champion in the Piedmont Athletic Conference, received 22 points from Tyshaun Goldston and 14 points from Connor Cassidy. NEWTON – Randleman’s boys’ basketball team kept its season alive with Tuesday night’s 62-59 victory against Newton-Conover in the third round of the Class 2-A state playoffs. Tyshaun Goldston scored 21 points for the sixth-seeded Tigers (23-5), who’ll play Friday night at second-seeded Salisbury (26-3) in a West Region semifinal Connor Cassidy’s 18 points and Greg Price’s 11 points also boosted Randleman, which held on after leading 52-41 going to the fourth quarter. Trinity, boys’ basketball Payne keeps pouring in big point totals and he moved to No. 2 all-time in Trinity’s boys’ basketball history last week. The senior guard has compiled more than 2,200 points in his career. He passed Josh Pittman (2,187 points) in a Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal last week against Eastern Randolph.
