Southwestern Randolph, boys’ basketball It has been a challenging start to the season for Southwestern Randolph, but Robertson has given the Cougars chances in games. Last week, the senior had games of 24 points and 19 points. Still, the Cougars absorbed a pair of narrow home losses on consecutive nights to South Davidson (by 42-40) and East Davidson (by 55-52). Here's a look at some of last week's area high school sports highlights: The Asheboro boys’ basketball team avenged a loss to Randleman by securing a 58-36 home victory with Jerquarius Stanback posting 18 points. Stanback had 18 again when the Blue Comets defeated visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 70-33 later in the week. ** Dominic Payne’s 32 points boosted Trinity past East Davidson 73-56. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Audra Petty

Randleman, girls’ basketball Petty is one of the returning players for the Tigers, who had a strong senior class last season. She has been up the task. Petty, a senior guard, posted 24 points against Asheboro and 27 points against Ledford in a pair of games last week. In Randleman’s first three games, Petty has averaged 26.3 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds. She also was credited with 2.7 steals per game. Dominic Payne of Trinity poured in 53 points in a 78-72 loss at Southern Guilford. That came one night after Payne’s 44 points in a 77-41 whipping of host East Davidson. Asheboro’s Jerquarius Stanback posted 25 points in a 53-39 road victory at Providence Grove. ASHEBORO – Preston Steele has had connections to Uwharrie Charter Academy boys’ basketball players and those are becoming stronger. Steele is the team’s new coach.
