Uwharrie Charter Academy’s volleyball team has had plenty to celebrate across the first couple of weeks of the season. The Eagles have already reached the 10-win mark with a bunch of non-conference matches. The Eagles added three more triumphs last week with home sweeps of Phoenix Academy and Union Pines and a road conquest of Richmond County. Wheatmore, boys’ soccer St. Clair, a senior midfielder, helped the Warriors during a productive first week of the season. The team scored a total of 13 goals in two games, with Wheatmore going 1-1 in those games. St. Clair, a captain, provided a goal and an assist in a 10-1 whipping of visiting North Stanly. The Warriors lost only one game in 2022, but they’re trying to rebound from last year’s four-win season. Wheatmore and other Piedmont Athletic Conference teams have a steady diet of non-conference games before league play kicks into gear in mid-September.

Randolph County teams had encouraging moments among their results in the first week of competition for the new school year. Boys’ soccer ** Asheboro went to Wilmington and split a pair of games. First came a 6-2 loss to Wilmington Hoggard. Then the Blue Comets edged Wilmington Ashley 1-0 on Juan Uscanga’s goal off Cam Letterlough’s assists. ** Wheatmore had some high-scoring adventures to begin the season. Southwestern Randolph’s powerhouse volleyball team will try to keep it going for another season. The Cougars, who’ve had 25 or more victories the past three seasons, begin their schedule Aug. 14 at home against Oak Grove, which had a 22-5 record last year. Southwestern Randolph, under coach Darby Kennedy, went 25-5 in 2023. The Cougars are a combined 79-14 in a three-year span. That stretch began with the 2021 state championship in Class 2A. Wheatmore’s Messner plays on winning soccer team in N.C. East-West All-Star Game

GREENSBORO – Maggie Messner, a defender from Wheatmore, was on the winning team for the North Carolina East-West Game for girls’ soccer last week. The West edged the East 1-0 at Jamieson Stadium on the Greensboro Grimsley campus. The only goal was scored about two minutes into the game by Hough’s Kylee Thompson, who was voted as the game’s Most Valuable Player. Goalkeepers Reese DeJong of Cox Mill and Elizabeth Navola of Christ the King combined to make five saves for the shutout. Last fall, she was a member of the Piedmont Athletic Conference champion girls’ tennis team. That included a spot on the All-PAC team. As a senior, she was part of the conference’s third-place doubles tandem. Swaim played key roles for Providence Grove’s girls’ soccer team during the spring. Record careers end for girls' program TRINITY – Wheatmore came up shy of returning to the Class 2A state championship game in girls’ soccer after playing in the final the past two years. Yet the impact produced by the Warriors might be far reaching. “It has been a heckuva ride,” Wheatmore coach Rick Maness said. Wheatmore was the 2022 state champion and the 2023 runner-up.
