Here's a look at some of last week's area high school sports highlights: The Asheboro boys’ basketball team avenged a loss to Randleman by securing a 58-36 home victory with Jerquarius Stanback posting 18 points. Stanback had 18 again when the Blue Comets defeated visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 70-33 later in the week. ** Dominic Payne’s 32 points boosted Trinity past East Davidson 73-56. Payne’s 34 points vs. visiting Oak Grove weren’t enough in a 76-67 loss. ** Parker Kines had 22 points in Wheatmore’s 53-50 loss at Ledford. Then on Friday, Stanback scored 33 points again, leading Asheboro in a 68-51 victory at Southwestern Randolph ** Trinity’s Dominic Payne scored 28 points in a 56-44 home loss to Oak Grove. Some big scoring outputs were highlights in last week’s limited high school basketball schedule. The biggest of those came in a boys’ game. Dominic Payne of Trinity poured in 53 points in a 78-72 loss at Southern Guilford. That came one night after Payne’s 44 points in a 77-41 whipping of host East Davidson. Asheboro’s Jerquarius Stanback posted 25 points in a 53-39 road victory at Providence Grove. (Randolph Record file photo) ASHEBORO – Chris Waddell’s roles have changed at Uwharrie Charter Academy but he’ll still coach the powerhouse wrestling team. His job titles now include duties as dean of students and athletics director. “I’ve been doing a lot of preparation during the summer,” Waddell said. Boys’ basketball coach Brad Monroe previously had the position of athletics director. GREENSBORO – Senior wrestler Aldo Hernandez became a three-time state champion, including two seasons in a row for Uwharrie Charter Academy, and two underclassmen from Randolph County schools also won state championships. Hernandez captured the Class 1-A title at 138 pounds with a dominating performance across two days at the Greensboro Coliseum. Freshman teammate Lorenzo Alston won at 145 pounds. Asheboro, wrestling Gutierrez is making his senior season a special one as he heads to the state tournament. He’s coming off the Class 3-A Midwest Regional championship at 120 pounds. During the two-day meet at North Davidson, Gutierrez won all four matches. That included a 5-2 decision against Mark Truman of West Rowan in the title bout.
