While the announcement that Toyota came late in 2021, the real work involving the megasite and all that will be involved with the battery manufacturing plant seemed to pick up real momentum in 2022. ASHEBORO — The Randolph County Board of Education met on Monday, December 12, to swear in new members and finalize voting for the naming of Trinity High School’s Gymnasium. The meeting opened up with the swearing-in of three members. Current board member Fred Burgess was sworn into a new term, whereas Phillip Lanier and Shannon Whitaker joined the board as new members. Wolfspeed should have impact in Randolph County

SILER CITY — Randolph County officials had roles in helping secure a major industrial project for nearby Siler City. Certainly, the impact will be felt in neighboring counties when Wolfspeed, Inc. cranks up operations in 2023 in Chatham County. The 1,800 new jobs should be created by 2030. Fiber internet expansion coming to Randolph County

HIGH POINT – The communities of Asheboro, Franklinville and Ramseur should have about 100% fiber coverage for high-speed internet service through an expansion set in place by NorthState. NorthState announced last week that it will fully fund the project and engineering work is imminent with construction slated to begin later this year. The expansion project for the multi-state high-speed fiber internet service provider also includes parts of Forsyth County, with the company announcing that 683 miles of fiber-optic technology will blanket the region. First monkeypox case confirmed in Randolph County

ASHEBORO – Randolph County has its first confirmed case of monkeypox. Tara Aker of Randolph County Public Health said after Monday’s announcement that “so far it’s an isolated case.” The unidentified individual is isolating at home, though no other information will be disclosed, with the health department citing patient privacy. “At this time, the risk of monkeypox transmission remains low,” Aker said, noting that the health department’s communicable disease team is monitoring the situation closely. Commencement ceremonies for most high schools in Randolph County are scheduled for next Wednesday. June 8 events will take place for schools in the Randolph County School System. Asheboro High School’s commencement will be a night later, coming at 7 p.m. June 9 at Lee J. Stone Stadium on campus. ASHEBORO – Nearly 4,000 more voters in Randolph County cast early ballots for this month’s primary compared to a similar election cycle four years ago. With four early voting sites, the total number of voters in Randolph County checked in at 10,205. Fourteen days of early voting concluded Saturday afternoon. Saturday’s number of voters was 1,055. The primary day was set for Tuesday. In 2018, the total number of early voters in the county was 6,376.
