Record careers end for girls' program TRINITY – Wheatmore came up shy of returning to the Class 2A state championship game in girls’ soccer after playing in the final the past two years. MOORESVILLE – Wheatmore’s bid to make it to the state final in girls’ soccer for the third year in a row was dashed Tuesday night. Pine Lake Prep defeated the visiting Warriors 3-2 in the Class 2A West Region final in a rematch from last season. Ellie Garrison scored both goals for the sixth-seeded Warriors (17-5). Wheatmore, boys’ golf Ryan Marshall of Wheatmore was the Piedmont Athletic Conference champion by shooting 5-over-par 77 last week at Holly Ridge Golf Links. Marshall, a junior, shot sub-40 on both the front side and backside for a five-stroke edge on Trinity’s Bo Earnhardt. On Monday, Marshall placed third in the Class 2-A Midwest Regional to reserve a spot in next week’s state tournament.
