ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Kynnedi Routh

 Wheatmore, girls’ basketball ‌Routh has been a contributor for Wheatmore during what has been a bounce-back season for the Warriors. Wheatmore placed third in the Ledford Christmas Tournament last week. Routh, a junior, has been among the consistent scorers for the Warriors, who’ve had a relatively balanced attack. In the tournament, Wheatmore won 51-26 vs. host Ledford before falling 51-41 to East Davidson. The Warriors capped their tournament participation by defeating West Davidson 53-32. With a 9-4 record entering January, the Warriors have matched last season’s win total. Routh also played on the school’s volleyball team.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Brandon Campbell

 Trinity, boys’ basketball Campbell has been a solid player for the Bulldogs, averaging in double-figure points this season. He was slightly above 10 points per game last season. The senior forward has been a good complement for high-scoring teammate Dominic Payne. His ability to produce offensively has given Trinity some versatility. Campbell is a two-time All-PAC selection in basketball. Campbell has been an all-conference choice in track and field as well. On the football team, he was one of the Bulldogs’ top receivers along with among the leading tackers on defense as a linebacker. ‌

On January 1, 2024, North Carolina joins the nationwide tradition of First Day Hikes, an event organized by the National Association of State Park Directors. The N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation announced that the state will host more than 50 staff-led hikes across its state parks. ASHEBORO — The North Carolina Zoo announced the untimely death of Fenn, the beloved six-month-old giraffe calf, whose birth and presence at the zoo delighted individuals around the world. A grief counselor was brought in to support staff members as they navigate the emotions associated with the tragic loss. Fenn was nursing when he was startled by another giraffe. He bolted, colliding with a nearby gate and falling to the ground. ASHEBORO – The Asheboro City Council met Thursday, Dec. 7 to swear in incumbents Edward Burks and Charles Swiers as well as newly elected councilor Joseph Trogdon, Jr. to their seats.
