ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Owen Whelan

 Southwestern Randolph, track and field Whelan became the Piedmont Athletic Conference champion in the boys’ discus last week in the league championship meet at Wheatmore. The senior had a winning toss of 122 feet, 2 inches, edging defending champion Ty Moton of Randleman. Owen improved his throw by more than 35 from the previous year. Owen also placed third in the shot put at 40-6¾. Whelan has been an All-PAC football player for the past two years. He’s committed to play football at Guilford College.

ARCHDALE — Ryan Marshall’s even-par 72 was the winning score in the Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament for boys’ golf last week at Holly Ridge Golf Links. Providence Grove was the team champion, with three golfers among the top 10. Marshall, also last year’s champion, posted 37 on the frontside and 35 on the back nine. Wheatmore, girls’ soccer It has been another high-scoring season for the senior midfielder. She has a team-leading 41 goals and nine assists to help the Warriors to another strong season.
