Luck retires from roles at AHS

ASHEBORO — Steve Luck has retired as athletics director and a teacher from Asheboro High School, where he served in various roles for nearly 25 years. He became the AD in 2013. “The thing that I’m proud of the most is the work in the classroom,” Luck said. “That’s what paid the bills.” He stepped aside at the end of April. Then he placed second in last week’s Class 1-A Midwest Regional. Carter, a junior, posted 4-over-par 78 on Monday in the first round of the Class 1-A state tournament at Longleaf Golf & Family Club in Southern Pines. Former Southwestern Randolph softball standout Heaven Maness of Wingate added to her accolades by being named to the All-South Atlantic Conference first team. Maness is a first-team pick for the second year in a row. She posted a .361 batting average during the regular season while belting nine home runs and a team-best 12 doubles. The third baseman also went 20-for-20 in stolen bases. She was the 2021 SAC Freshman of the Year. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Arianna Lovingood-Smith

Asheboro  |  track and field  Lovingood-Smith won three individual events as the Blue Comets were overwhelming winners in the Mid-Piedmont Conference championship last week at Oak Grove. Lovingood-Smith, a senior, won the high jump with an effort of 4 feet, 8 inches, claimed the long jump at 15-7 and captured the triple jump at 36-6. This was all part of Asheboro’s title effort. The Blue Comets rang up 157 points compared to runner-up Central Davidson’s 93. Asheboro also had an individual winner in the shot put with Morgan Williams’ toss of 29-4½.

SOPHIA – Coy Beard led for a large portion of the Late Models race on his way to victory Saturday night at Caraway Speedway. Dean Fogleman was the runner-up, with Daniel Schadt in third place. In the 30-lap Challengers race, the winner was Brian Rose in a wire-to-wire effort. Alan Vance placed second and Fletcher Whatley was third among nine entrants. High jumper Josie Allred of Southwestern Randolph is headed to Navy to be a member of the women’s track and field team.  Allred was also a part of Southwestern Randolph’s Class 2-A state champion volleyball team. Last year, Allred was the Mid-Piedmont Conference champion in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 1 inch in the conference meet.  Lineman picks Guilford Providence Grove football player Brett Breedlove has picked Guilford College as his next stop. Uwharrie Charter Academy alum Hunter Hill was named Rookie Pitcher of the Week recently in the USA South Conference for baseball. Hill, a North Carolina Wesleyan freshman from Asheboro, threw four shutout innings across two relief outings. He gave up a total of four hits with four strikeouts and without a walk. Hill, a right-hander, logged the victory in N.C. Wesleyan’s 3-2 victory at Greensboro College. The result marked his first career decision. Providence Grove’s undefeated softball team sealed at least a share of the regular-season title in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. The Patriots began this week with a 17-0 overall record and, with two conference games left, a 10-0 record in the PAC. Randleman’s baseball team finished its regular season league schedule with a 12-0 record against PAC opponents. The Tigers will end up with at least a four-game edge in the standings.
