PAC basketball finals set with high seeds

The girls’ basketball team from Southwestern Randolph goes into Friday night’s Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament championship game with an undefeated record.

The Cougars (25-0) meet visiting Uhwarrie Charter Academy at 6 p.m. It was pushed back one day because of weather-related issues.

Southwestern Randolph topped Randleman for the fourth time this season with Tuesday night’s 54-38 victory.

Jordin George had 17 points, Kenzie Martin provided 11 points and 10 rebounds and Gracie Hodgin added 10 points. Randleman fell to 15-10 despite Jacquline McDaniel’s 13 points.

It has been an eventful week for UCA’s team with a pair of victories.

The third-seeded Eagles (21-7) achieved some milestones.

In Tuesday’s 56-49 semifinal victory at second-seeded Providence Grove, Nevaeh Staples poured in 15 points, Lainey Thomas had 14 points, Naimah Al-Arif had 12 points and Kayla Brown added 10 points.

Providence Grove fell to 17-8.

UCA was coming off Monday’s 49-16 handling of sixth-seeded Eastern Randolph (6-17). Abbie Gudino had 11 points in that game.

It marked the first time the Eagles had reached the 20-win mark. That game also gave coach Austin Davis his 100th career victory.

Fourth-seeded Randleman notched a 38-32 victory against fifth-seeded Wheatmore in the quarterfinals with McDaniel posting 14 points.

Providence Grove advanced past seventh-seeded Trinity (8-17) by 44-28.

PAC boys

Second-seeded Eastern Randolph and regular-season champion Randleman advanced to the tournament final, which is slated for 7 p.m. Friday at Randleman.

Eastern Randolph won twice at home, rolling past seventh-seeded Trinity 92-56 on Monday and topping third-seeded UCA 85-67 on Tuesday.

Camden Jones racked up 28 points, Julian Brooks posted 23 and Timothy Brower added 15 points as the Wildcats stopped UCA for the second time in nine nights. Aaron Smith had 21 points for UCA, while Jaylan Brown and Braeden Lamb notched 14 apiece.

In the Trinity game, Brooks poured in 31 points and Jones and Brower each had 14 points.

After a bye in the quarterfinals, Randleman blitzed fourth-seeded Providence Grove 71-50 as Chase Farlow had 22 points and Connor Cassidy notched 12 points.

For Providence Grove, Andrew Thomas had 24 points and Will Dabbs added 11.

UCA’s 61-51 quarterfinal victory against sixth-seeded Southwestern Randolph came with 16 points from Jaydon DeNamur and 13 apiece for Smith, Lamb and Brown.

Providence Grove withstood fifth-seeded Wheatmore for a 66-59 triumph in the quarterfinals as Dabbs compiled 23 points. Parker Kines with 18 points and Wyatt Stepp with 15 points countered for Wheatmore.

Mid-Piedmont Conference boys

The tournament was reduced to two rounds because of weather concerns.

Fourth-seeded Asheboro lost 44-33 at top-seeded Ledford in Monday’s semifinals. Osiris Rodriguez had 11 points for Asheboro.

That put the Blue Comets at 15-8 as they await the pairings for the state playoffs.
