ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Allie Frazier

Providence Grove  |  girls’ basketball Frazier had three strong outings for the Patriots, who went 2-1 in those games. Frazier’s impactful week started with 19 points in the 50-34 victory against visiting East Davidson. By scoring 17 points, the senior guard had more than half of the Patriots’ points in a 38-32 road loss to Southern Guilford. Frazier capped the week with 19 points in a 49-43 triumph against Asheboro. Through four games this season, Frazier had a scoring average of 17.3 points per game. She also shared the team rebounding lead with Asia Steverson with 7.3 per outing.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: DJ Thomas

Eastern Randolph, football Thomas, a senior, had a solid final football season for the Wildcats, who had the longest postseason run among teams from Randolph County. Eastern Randolph finished with an 11-2 record. For the second year in a row, the team was undefeated in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. Thomas was a receiver for the Wildcats, who averaged 36 points per game. He also has been a member of the school’s boys’ basketball program.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Christian Long

Randleman, football/boys’ basketball The seasons changed for Randleman, but Christian Long keeps on producing. After helping guide the Tigers to a second-place finish in the Piedmont Athletic Conference football standings as the starting quarterback, Long turned his attention to basketball. In last week’s season-opening 71-54 victory at Lexington, Long racked up 17 points. He made three of four 3-point shots and went 4-for-4 on free throws. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Zander Cheek

Providence Grove  |  football   Cheek, a senior, scored four postseason touchdowns in two games for the Patriots.  Providence Grove’s season ended with an 8-4 record with Thursday night’s loss at Reidsville, where Cheek scored a touchdown. Cheek scored three touchdowns in the previous week when Providence Grove won a football game in the state playoffs for the first time by winning at McMichael. Cheek led the Patriots with 38.5 receiving yards per game to go with a team-leading four touchdown catches. He scored 13 touchdowns this season, behind only his twin brother Zane Cheek, who had 20.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Anakin Leister

Wheatmore, boys’ soccer Leister, a senior, was one of the most productive players for Wheatmore, which had an undefeated regular season.  Leister racked up a team-high 19 assists this season. He was third on the Wheatmore team in goals with 16. Leister had two goals and an assist last week when the Warriors opened the Class 2-A state playoffs with a 5-2 victory against visiting Monroe. The Warriors (19-1-4) reached the second round before their season ended with a loss to Patton.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Carlos Parroquin

UCA  |  boys’ soccer   Parroquin, a senior, has been among the top scorers for the Eagles, who entered the Class 1-A state playoffs this week. He capped the regular season by scoring three goals in Uwharrie Charter Academy’s 5-4 victory at Southwestern Randolph. That result avenged a four-goal loss from earlier in the season. UCA was one of seven teams in Randolph County to qualify for the state playoffs in boys’ soccer.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: David Agudelo

Asheboro  |  boys’ soccer Agudelo, a senior goalkeeper, has been up to the task for Asheboro, even without a lot of action in some cases. Agudelo has been at the back end for the Blue Comets, who’ve recorded eight shutouts this season. He has been credited with 28 saves. Last week, Asheboro posted a 3-0 victory at Oak Grove, with Cristian Ortiz scoring three goals. Edwin Perez had two assists, and Reece Gutierrez had one assist. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Caroline Wright

Providence Grove  |  girls’ golf Wright secured Player of the Year honors in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. She was the season-long champion in the conference.  In last week’s final PAC match, Providence Grove emerged as the team champion with a 35-shot edge on runner-up Eastern Randolph at Siler City Country Club. Trinity was the third-place team, followed by Randleman and Wheatmore. Wright will be among the entrants in next week’s Class 1-A/2-A Central Regional at Stonebridge Golf Club in Monroe.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Dacia Lowery

Uwharrie Charter Academy  |  volleyball Lowery played a role as the Eagles won two matches last week to stay in contention for the top spot in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. Lowery had 16 kills, and five blocks as UCA topped visiting Providence Grove 21-25, 25-15, 25-21, 13-25, 15-9. That was followed by UCA’s 24-26, 25-18, 25-22, 25-23 victory at Trinity when Lowery provided 11 kills and five blocks. Entering this month with two weeks in the regular season remaining, UCA held an 11-3 overall record and 6-2 PAC mark.

 Southwestern Randolph  |  volleyball   Smith helped Southwestern Randolph to two more Piedmont Athletic Conference victories last week, including in a showdown with Uwharrie Charter Academy. She supplied 20 kills, 14 digs, and three blocks in the four-set victory at UCA in a rematch of last year’s conference tournament final. Others to turn in big numbers for the Cougars in that match were Gracie Hodgin, Riley Key, Raegan LeRoy, Coley Shiflet, and Carleigh Whitson.
