ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Ava Cugino

Uwharrie Charter Academy, girls’ soccer Cugino repeated a spot on the Piedmont Athletic Conference all-conference team. This year, she was second among the Eagles with seven goals and third on the team with 11 assists. She also was one of the primary options on UCA for corner kicks. UCA produced an 8-11-2 record that included one road victory in the Class 1-A state playoffs. Cugino also participated in girls’ tennis for the Eagles.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: David Elliott

Asheboro, boys’ golf Elliott wrapped up his high school career by tying for 57th in the Class 3-A state tournament this spring. Elliott was a member of the Mid-Piedmont Conference all-conference team for the third year in a row. He was a three-time regional qualifier (while his freshman season in 2020 was cut short by the pandemic). ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Gabi Carter

Randleman, volleyball Carter was rated among Randleman’s top producers in several categories during her senior season on the volleyball team. She was the leader among the Tigers in service percentage and second on the team in aces. She also made strong contributions in blocks and kills per set. She played as an outside hitter and defensive specialist. Randleman racked up a 17-6 record in 2022 for its fifth consecutive winning season. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Skylar Pugh

Eastern Randolph, softball – Pugh was a force in the pitching circle and at the plate for the Wildcats during her senior season. She posted eight wins to go with two saves as a pitcher. She was credited with 131 strikeouts in 69 innings. Pugh’s four home runs were second on the team. Eastern Randolph finished with an 18-6 record. That’s the most wins for the Wildcats since 2019.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Mikalah Walls

Wheatmore, girls’ soccer Walls, a forward and midfielder, was one of the seniors on the Warriors’ state runner-up team. Walls was the fourth-leading scorer on an offensive powerhouse. She cranked out 11 goals and provided five assists. She also occasionally took corner kicks for the Warriors. Walls was honored by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association with a Sportsmanship Award prior to the Class 2-A title game this month at UNC Greensboro Soccer Stadium. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Carter Brown

UCA, baseball Brown continued his strong postseason play with a stellar Class 1-A championship series. He went 3-for-4 with a triple in the clinching game against North Moore on Saturday in Holly Springs. Combined with his one hit in Game 1, he was 4-for-7 in the state finals. That helped the junior right fielder be selected as the Most Valuable Player in the championship series.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Peyton McCollum

UCA, baseball McCollum is a senior outfielder for the Eagles, who’ll play this week in the Class 1-A state finals. He has been a key hitter during the state playoffs. In Game 1 of the West Regional finals vs. Eastern Randolph, McCollum provided two hits, scored a run and drove in a run. He also had two hits in the third-round game against North Stokes and the fourth-round game against Draughn. McCollum and first baseman Ben Medinger are the only seniors who’ve regularly been in the starting lineup this season for UCA.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Izabella Ringley

Wheatmore, girls’ soccer Ringley has been a reliable player for the Warriors, who are trying to complete another undefeated season. She’s a defender and midfielder. A senior, Ringley rates high on the team in steals. Through the Warriors’ first 21 games, she had tallied four goals and seven assists. Some of her best work might come on the defensive end in the rare times Wheatmore has been challenged. The Warriors gave up only eight goals during the regular season.

Eastern Randolph, baseball Asbill gave a strong pitching performance in one of Eastern Randolph’s two road victories last week in the Class 1-A state playoffs. Asbill, a junior right-hander, was listed for throwing 103 pitches when the Wildcats defeated Mt. Airy. This marks the second year in a row that the Wildcats have secured two victories in the state playoffs. Before that, they hadn’t won a state-playoff game since 2013.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Davis Gore

Asheboro, baseball Gore has been a steady performer for the Blue Comets on the baseball field this spring. He shares the team lead with six home runs, and he’s second among the Blue Comets with 18 runs scored. Gore is a catcher and utility player heading to Belmont Abbey for college. Asheboro won four of its last five games entering the Class 3-A state playoffs this week. Gore also played football for the Blue Comets.
