Prep boys: PAC race looks crowded

It’s tight atop the Piedmont Athletic Conference boys’ basketball schedule near the midway mark of the league slate. Trinity suffered its first PAC loss of the season when host Eastern Randolph won 81-77 in Friday night’s game at Ramseur. That was a rematch of last February’s PAC Tournament championship game on the same court, with the Wildcats winning that one as well. Eastern Randolph also entered this week with just one PAC defeat. RANDLEMAN – Randleman doesn’t have a game on this week’s boys’ basketball schedule. When the Tigers return to play, there’s a showdown looming. On Jan. 23, there’s a clash at Trinity that looms large on the Piedmont Athletic Conference landscape. Last week, Randleman toppled visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 67-44 with Greg Price’s 22 points and Tyshaun Goldston’s 20 points leading the way. Two nights later, the Tigers won 59-48 at home with Goldston supplying 18 points and Price with 12 points. Those results pushed Randleman’s record to 12-5 overall, 5-0 in PAC play. ASHEBORO – It was quite a week for Asheboro’s boys’ basketball team. The Blue Comets topped a strong in-county team to wrap up non-conference play and then won its Mid-Piedmont Conference opener. It all added up to a 10-game winning streak entering this week. Asheboro defeated visiting Eastern Randolph 80-75 in a highly anticipated matchup behind Jerquarius Stanback’s 26 points and David Rodriguez’s 25 points. The game pitted last season’s regular-season champions from the Mid-Piedmont Conference and Piedmont Athletic Conference. It was the first time the Blue Comets and Wildcats met in four years. RANDLEMAN – Randleman made perhaps the first big statement in Piedmont Athletic Conference boys’ basketball by knocking off defending champion Eastern Randolph 71-50 last week. Teams began play Friday night in the Piedmont Athletic Conference and there were a couple of close games in girls’ basketball. Defending champion Randleman received 21 points and 10 rebounds from Audra Petty in a 47-41 home victory against Wheatmore. Providence Grove edged visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 59-53 with Brooke Ingram racking up 25 points. Southwestern Randolph had an easy time with visiting Trinity in a 55-4 result. Some big scoring outputs were highlights in last week’s limited high school basketball schedule. The biggest of those came in a boys’ game. Dominic Payne of Trinity poured in 53 points in a 78-72 loss at Southern Guilford. That came one night after Payne’s 44 points in a 77-41 whipping of host East Davidson. It worked out well for a couple of Randolph County football teams playing home games Friday night when the state playoffs began. Not so much for teams going on the road.
