Asheboro, girls’ basketball Lee has been a golfer competing at the state level, but she’s also one of the top basketball players for the Blue Comets girls’ team. The senior forward scored a team-high 16 points last week when Asheboro topped visiting Thomasville 60-9. That outcome snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Blue Comets. Lee has been the team’s top producer in terms of assists and blocked shots. She also has been the Asheboro leader in field goal percentage. Southwestern Randolph | girls’ basketball King was a key contributor to a pair of victories last week for the Cougars. The junior guard put up 16 points in Southwestern Randolph’s 67-15 non-conference home victory against Jordan-Matthews. King scored 17 points when the Cougars opened their Piedmont Athletic Conference schedule with a 53-45 victory at Trinity. She also had eight points in a 50-40 road loss to North Davidson.

Providence Grove | girls’ basketball Frazier had three strong outings for the Patriots, who went 2-1 in those games. Frazier’s impactful week started with 19 points in the 50-34 victory against visiting East Davidson. By scoring 17 points, the senior guard had more than half of the Patriots’ points in a 38-32 road loss to Southern Guilford. Frazier capped the week with 19 points in a 49-43 triumph against Asheboro. Through four games this season, Frazier had a scoring average of 17.3 points per game. She also shared the team rebounding lead with Asia Steverson with 7.3 per outing.

Providence Grove | football Cheek, a senior, scored four postseason touchdowns in two games for the Patriots. Providence Grove’s season ended with an 8-4 record with Thursday night’s loss at Reidsville, where Cheek scored a touchdown. Cheek scored three touchdowns in the previous week when Providence Grove won a football game in the state playoffs for the first time by winning at McMichael. Cheek led the Patriots with 38.5 receiving yards per game to go with a team-leading four touchdown catches. He scored 13 touchdowns this season, behind only his twin brother Zane Cheek, who had 20.

UCA | boys’ soccer Parroquin, a senior, has been among the top scorers for the Eagles, who entered the Class 1-A state playoffs this week. He capped the regular season by scoring three goals in Uwharrie Charter Academy’s 5-4 victory at Southwestern Randolph. That result avenged a four-goal loss from earlier in the season. UCA was one of seven teams in Randolph County to qualify for the state playoffs in boys’ soccer.

Southwestern Randolph | volleyball As the Cougars try to repeat as Class 2-A state champions, underclassmen are playing key roles. But Johnston is among the seniors on the roster. Last week, the Cougars won three matches. They took down Providence Grove in a sweep and then won a five-set match against Randleman to capture the Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament. Then on Saturday, the Cougars won against East Surry in the first round of the state playoffs. Johnston is a setter and outside hitter.

Asheboro | boys’ soccer Agudelo, a senior goalkeeper, has been up to the task for Asheboro, even without a lot of action in some cases. Agudelo has been at the back end for the Blue Comets, who’ve recorded eight shutouts this season. He has been credited with 28 saves. Last week, Asheboro posted a 3-0 victory at Oak Grove, with Cristian Ortiz scoring three goals. Edwin Perez had two assists, and Reece Gutierrez had one assist. The Blue Comets, who entered this week with a 16-1 overall record and 6-0 mark in the Mid-Piedmont Conference, have a non-conference showdown scheduled…
