Providence Grove girls hold spot top ahead of Trinity in PAC tennis

The girls' tennis teams from Providence Grove and Trinity both finished 9-1 in regular-season Piedmont Athletic Conference play to tie for first place. Last week, Providence Grove defeated Trinity in a special tiebreaker match to determine the top seed from the conference for the dual team state playoffs. The PAC Tournament is set for Tuesday at Asheboro Memorial Park. Providence Grove and Trinity were the only teams with winning records in league play.

Randolph County teams had encouraging moments among their results in the first week of competition for the new school year.     Boys’ soccer   ** Asheboro went to Wilmington and split a pair of games. First came a 6-2 loss to Wilmington Hoggard. Turgeon received All-Piedmont Athletic Conference honors in girls’ tennis and softball as a senior.   In tennis, she captured the PAC Tournament singles championship last fall. She has been a regular for the Warriors, holding a spot in the lineup in 2021 as sophomore when Wheatmore claimed the PAC title with an undefeated team league mark. Wheatmore claimed its fourth straight conference girls’ tennis team title in 2022.   A pitcher and utility player, she was Wheatmore’s lone All-PAC softball selection in each of the past three seasons. Popp was presented with the Pat Gainey Award, which is a student scholarship in memory of Pat Gainey of Dunn. Providence Grove, girls’ soccer, tennis Swaim participated in three sports for the Patriots and made big impacts. Last fall, she was a member of the Piedmont Athletic Conference champion girls’ tennis team. That included a spot on the All-PAC team. As a senior, she was part of the conference’s third-place doubles tandem. Swaim played key roles for Providence Grove’s girls’ soccer team during the spring. ASHEBORO – Uwharrie Charter Academy scored two seven-inning runs to edge host Southwestern Randolph 4-3 in a game to determine the Piedmont Athletic Conference regular-season softball champion Thursday night. At 11-1 in PAC play, the Eagles finished a game ahead of defending champion Southwestern Randolph. It’s the school’s first PAC softball title. Aubrie Kauffman’s two-run bloop single provided the tying and go-ahead runs. UCA pitcher Mollie Bulla struck out 10 batters. Kenzie Hill and Jayla Hurley both scored two runs.
