ASHEBORO — Big point totals were the order of the week for area high school football games. Each of the Friday games involving Randolph County teams had at least one team reaching the 40-point mark. ASHEBORO — The Randleman Tigers fell to the Oak Grove Grizzlies in junior varsity and varsity volleyball action Tuesday night. The JV Tigers lost in 3 sets (22-25, 25-23, 4-15) to . County teams send strong opening messages

ASHEBORO — What an opening week for Randolph County football teams. The seven football-playing schools went a combined 6-1, with the lone loss coming in the only intra-county matchup (Asheboro defeating Randleman). In the other five games, the county teams outscored their opponents by a combined score of 177-31. The most notable might have been Eastern Randolph’s whipping of Eastern Alamance, which has been a Class 3-A power for most of the past decade. Asheboro pulls opening surprise at Randleman RANDLEMAN — Asheboro’s football team won for the first time in more than 600 days to open the season. Now the Blue Comets will have their sights set on more conquests. After a winless record in seven games when the 2020 season was shifted to this past spring, Asheboro might have been largely dismissed as a factor entering the new campaign. Prep baseball awards go to area players, coaches

ASHEBORO — Randleman third baseman Hunter Atkins was selected as the PAC-7 Player of the Year in baseball. Atkins's teammate Andrew Cox was picked as Pitcher of the Year in the league for the eventual Class 2-A state champions. The league’s Coach of the Year is Glen Hunt of Providence Grove. In the Mid-Piedmont Conference, Southwestern Randolph’s Bryson Hogan was picked as Player of the Year. Asheboro’s Brett Hoogkamp of the regular-season co-championship team was named Coach of the Year for the league.

White’s no-hitter propels Randleman to 2A state title

Ryan White had only one thing in mind when he took the mound for the final inning of Saturday’s NCHSAA 2A championship series finale at Burlington Athletic Stadium. Win the state title for his Randleman High School baseball team. Finishing off the no-hitter was just a bonus. The junior right-hander struck out 11 and walked only two while pitching the Tigers to a 4-0 victory against Rutherfordton-Spindale Central that clinched the second state championship in school history.
