Eastern Randolph’s boys and Southwestern Randolph’s girls and Randleman’s girls also advanced with victories Tuesday night. The second round comes Friday night. Randleman’s boys’ team holds the top seed among all Randolph County teams on the bracket for the basketball state playoffs. The Tigers (23-1), who are Piedmont Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament champions, are the No. 2 seed in the Class 2A West Region. Southwestern Randolph’s girls’ team is a No. 3 seed in the Class 2-A West Region. The North Carolina High School Athletic Association released the pairings and seeds Sunday night. ASHEBORO – An undefeated record for Southwestern Randolph’s girls’ basketball team was dashed in the Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament championship game. Uwharrie Charter Academy churned out a 49-43 victory Friday night. It’s the first conference tournament championship for the Eagles, who held the No. 3 seed and avenged to regular-season losses. Navaeh Staples poured in 19 points, Naimah Al-Arif provided 10 points and Lainey Thomas had eight points for visiting UCA (22-7). North Carolina outfielder Alex Coleman, a Southwestern Randolph graduate, was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference preseason softball team. Coleman, a senior, will be in her second season with the Tar Heels after transferring from Marshall. Last year, she led the ACC with a .436 batting average. She also had a team-leading 44 runs scored, 20 stolen bases and 18 multi-hit games. Coleman’s batting average was the best for a North Carolina player since 1996. Southwestern Randolph, boys’ basketball Chapman had a couple of clutch performances last week. The senior guard led the Cougars with 17 points in a 58-53 victory against Providence Grove. He also supplied 22 points in a 53-46 non-league loss to South Stanly. Chapman has been his team’s top scorer this season after rating fourth in scoring average on last season’s team.
