Then on Friday, Stanback scored 33 points again, leading Asheboro in a 68-51 victory at Southwestern Randolph ** Trinity’s Dominic Payne scored 28 points in a 56-44 home loss to Oak Grove. Some big scoring outputs were highlights in last week’s limited high school basketball schedule. The biggest of those came in a boys’ game. Dominic Payne of Trinity poured in 53 points in a 78-72 loss at Southern Guilford. That came one night after Payne’s 44 points in a 77-41 whipping of host East Davidson. Asheboro’s Jerquarius Stanback posted 25 points in a 53-39 road victory at Providence Grove. That included Southwestern Randolph and Asheboro splitting a pair of meetings. In the girls’ game, Caressa King’s 20 points led host Southwestern Randolph to a 67-33 triumph against Asheboro. Eastern Randolph goes for its third consecutive PAC championship. The Wildcats’ biggest challenge might come from Randleman. Those teams conveniently meet in the regular-season finale Oct. 27 at Randleman. There’s plenty to sort through prior to that potential showdown. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Sarabeth Johnson

Trinity, volleyball Johnson has been a steady contributor for the Bulldogs during her senior season. Trinity carried a six-match winning streak into action this week. In last week’s five-set conquering of Eastern Randolph, Johnson provided 18 digs, 17 kills and four aces. Johnson, a captain who’s listed as an outside hitter and a setter, rates in the top two on the team in kills, digs and service aces. She received all-PAC recognition in the spring as a jumper for Trinity’s track and field team.

RANDLEMAN – John Kirkpatrick threw two touchdown passes and ran for another touchdown in undefeated Randleman’s 53-14 trouncing of visiting Asheboro in Friday night’s non-conference football game. Edison Hernandez scored on two touchdown runs and Randleman (5-0) never trailed. Kirkpatrick completed 19 of 28 throws for 310 yards.
