The final night of the high school football regular season comes with a matchup of the two top teams in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. Randleman visits Eastern Randolph, marking the third year in a row the teams meet with first place at stake to conclude the regular season. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Laurel Bernhardt

Providence Grove, cross country She’ll be in the Class 2A state meet for the second year in a row after a strong showing in last week’s Midwest Regional. Bernhardt, a sophomore, had a strong month, winning the Piedmont Athletic Conference championship and then placing seventh in the Midwest Regional. Last year, she placed 27th in the state meet among 132 entrants. Bernhardt was a standout last spring in track and field and a member of the All-PAC team.

The featured event as part of the final regular-season card was billed as a test to determine possible engine and carburetor rules for the 2025 season. Cross country runners from county secure spots for state meet Asheboro’s Cam Letterlough had another big week as the Blue Comets clinched the Mid-Piedmont Conference championship in boys’ soccer. Letterlough tallied three times when the host Blue Comets topped second-place Ledford 4-2 to wrap up the title with one game remaining on the league slate. Both of Ledford’s losses in conference play have come to Asheboro. Randleman, cross country Mercado was the winner of the boys’ race in the Piedmont Athletic Conference championships last week at Wheatmore’s 3.1-mile course. Mercado, a senior, finished in 18 minutes, 48 seconds for a 10-second edge on teammate Jedidiah Dake. Providence Grove won the team title by one point on Randleman. Earlier in the month, Mercado was 61st out of 182 runners in the Hagan-Stone Cross Country Classic in Pleasant Garden.
