Whitson leaves as Cougars’ softball coach

Chad Whitson coached Southwestern Randolph’s softball team to strong seasons. (Randolph Record file photo) ASHEBORO – Southwestern Randolph softball coach Chad Whitson has resigned after five seasons, the school announced Monday. The Cougars held a 65-22 record under Whitson’s direction. Toby Strider, who had been an assistant coach, has been promoted to head coach. Strider also previously coached at the middle school. The Cougars positioned a 22-2 record this year, going undefeated in Piedmont Athletic Conference play and ranking among the top teams in the state in Class 2-A. The team has a good core of returning players who’ve produced across the first couple of weeks of the season. SOPHIA – Jason York continued his winning ways by winning the Late Models race Saturday night at Caraway Speedway. Tony Black and Dean Ward brought out new cars to try to stop York’s winning ways. Both had solid performances with Black claiming the runner-up spot. Ward was running second to York when a quick shower halted racing on lap 30. Ward elected to withdraw at that time leaving Black, Camden Thomas, Toby Layne and Chase Murphy to chase York when racing resumed. ** In Mini Stocks, Robert Strmiski claimed the 40-lap victory. UCA, baseball Brown continued his strong postseason play with a stellar Class 1-A championship series. He went 3-for-4 with a triple in the clinching game against North Moore on Saturday in Holly Springs. Combined with his one hit in Game 1, he was 4-for-7 in the state finals. That helped the junior right fielder be selected as the Most Valuable Player in the championship series.
