Southwestern Randolph  | girls’ basketball King was a key contributor to a pair of victories last week for the Cougars. The junior guard put up 16 points in Southwestern Randolph’s 67-15 non-conference home victory against Jordan-Matthews. King scored 17 points when the Cougars opened their Piedmont Athletic Conference schedule with a 53-45 victory at Trinity. She also had eight points in a 50-40 road loss to North Davidson.

Asheboro council gives approval for cancer center

ASHEBORO — The Asheboro City Council met Thursday, with the primary focus of the agenda being on the petition by Cone Health for a new cancer center. The council gave the approval to delegate a plan for the management and maintenance of the Zoo City Social District to Asheboro Downtown, Inc.  The plan will include potential expansion targets and areas and will help to set uniform standards for signage. SILER CITY — The Christmas for Thousands event that’s put on by Mountaire Farms will be held Saturday at the Siler City location. The event begins at 8 a.m. with boxes that have been assembled to be distributed to pre-registered groups at the Chatham Charter School campus. There are no walk-ups for this event, as all boxes are reserved for families, churches, and non-profits. Mountaire Farms is partnering with hundreds of churches and non-profits in four states this month to provide complete meals for families in need for Christmas. ASHEBORO — The Randolph County Board of Commissioners met Monday, where the board had select members resworn in and updates on various county projects were provided. Providence Grove  |  girls’ basketball Frazier had three strong outings for the Patriots, who went 2-1 in those games. Frazier’s impactful week started with 19 points in the 50-34 victory against visiting East Davidson. By scoring 17 points, the senior guard had more than half of the Patriots’ points in a 38-32 road loss to Southern Guilford. Frazier capped the week with 19 points in a 49-43 triumph against Asheboro. Through four games this season, Frazier had a scoring average of 17.3 points per game. She also shared the team rebounding lead with Asia Steverson with 7.3 per outing.

SOPHIA – The 36th edition of Caraway Speedway’s Thanksgiving Classic has been postponed for about two months. Last Sunday’s version of the event was called off because of expected rainy weather. So Russell Hackett’s Original Thanksgiving Classic has been moved to Jan. 29. WINSTON-SALEM – The Bobby Labonte Foundation, founded by NASCAR Champion and Hall of Fame race car driver Bobby Labonte, teamed up with Herbalife Nutrition to build and donate 60 youth bikes at the YWCA of Winston-Salem recently as part of the foundation’s annual charitable efforts. Furniture company cuts employees with no notice

WINSTON-SALEM – United Furniture Industries terminated all its employees last week just days before Thanksgiving in a move that drew considerable backlash in the Triad. Workers based in Winston-Salem were among those impacted. The Mississippi-based company sent an email overnight just two days before Thanksgiving notifying staffers it was terminating all employees due to “unforeseen business circumstances” and telling them not report for their shifts.
