RAMSEUR – Devonte Brooks scored two touchdowns and Eastern Randolph repeated as Piedmont Athletic Conference football champion with a 28-13 victory against visiting Randleman on Friday night. Ervodd Cassady returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown against his former team as part of Eastern Randolph’s scoring plays. The Wildcats (9-1 overall, 5-0 PAC) have won nine games in a row since a season-opening loss at Eastern Alamance. They benefited from three Randleman turnovers. RALEIGH — Andrew Vial of Liberty calls his watermelon-growing expertise a hobby. It’s a pretty good one. Vial was the winner again in the Great Pumpkin & Watermelon Weigh-off that’s associated with the North Carolina State Fair at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. Vial was the winner with an entry of 306 pounds. There were 22 watermelons entered into the contest. A year ago, Vial’s 341-pound entry was the largest in the history of the N.C. State Fair. Early voting continues in Randolph County

ASHEBORO — More than 4,000 Randolph County residents cast ballots across the first three days of early voting for next month’s general election. Voting opened last Thursday, with 1,858 voters heading to the polls on the first day. Another 1,799 people cast ballots Friday, and then 599 cast ballots Saturday. Each day, the largest turnout came at the Randolph County Board of Elections headquarters in Asheboro. Those totals were 800, 724, and 194. TRINITY – Providence Grove won the girls’ and boys’ team championships for cross country in vastly different manners in the Piedmont Athletic Conference on Wheatmore’s 3.1-mile course last week. The girls’ competition marked a tie between Providence Grove and Uwharrie Charter Academy with 34 points apiece using the five scoring runners from each team. After some weather-related cancelations involving scheduled race nights at the track, this should be a busy regular-season finale.
