Asheboro girls work through growing pains

ASHEBORO – It’s a learning season for the Asheboro girls’ basketball team. Last year at about this time, the team was embarking on a shortened season that resulted on a spot in the Class 3-A state championship game. Now the Blue Comets are in a different situation. “We’re working on things and we’re improving and getting better,” coach Don Corry said. It’s not a huge surprise to Corry that there are growing pains this season. The Blue Comets lost personnel that accounted for about 85 percent of the offensive production off last season’s team. Trinity | Boys Basketball Moffitt, a sophomore, racked up 35 points in the team’s lone game of the week. That nearly matched the total scored by the opponent in the Bulldogs’ 73-44 victory against host Eastern Randolph. Trinity also received 16 points from Dominic Payne and 12 points from Brandon Campbell in the game. The outcome means the Bulldogs improved their record to 12-3. It put the team at 4-1 in true road games.

Eastern Randolph | Girls’ Basketball Snotherly scored 49 points as the Wildcats split two games last week. She accounted for nearly two-thirds of the team’s scoring in those games. She scored 24 points in a 42-35 loss at Southwestern Randolph. The junior was back with 25 points three nights later when the Wildcats topped visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 40-34, snapping a three-game homecourt losing streak. Snotherly connected on three 3-point shots in that game.

Baseball team changes name to ZooKeepers

ASHEBORO — Asheboro’s summer collegiate baseball team has a new name. It’s the Asheboro ZooKeepers. Formerly known as the Asheboro Copperheads, the Coastal Plain League team announced Monday that it has a new name. The team, which was founded in 1999, blasted Guns ‘N Roses’s “Welcome to the Jungle” as it unveiled logos and uniforms at Asheboro Recreation Center. The team’s colors will change to a safari-theme with tan and brown dominating the logo and uniforms. Gone will be the burnt orange and black of the Copperheads. At a press conference at the Asheboro Recreation Center Gymnasium, the team, which was founded in 1999, blasted Guns 'N Roses's "Welcome to the Jungle" as they unveiled logos and uniforms for the team. Randleman girls claim tourney title

CLIMAX – Randleman’s girls’ basketball team secured the championship of the Davidson-Randolph Christmas Classic at the Providence Grove site last week. The Tigers used 25 points from Gracyn Hall to produce a 69-53 victory against Providence Grove in the title game of the three-day event. “We played pretty well for the three days,” Randleman coach Brandon Varner said. “To be able to bring that trophy back to Randleman is pretty special.” Hall was the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Uwharrie Charter Academy | Wrestling Palma secured first place in the girls’ division of the Holy Angels Invitational last week in Charlotte. It was a rare event set up with several brackets for girls. Palma captured first place at 113 pounds. In the title match, she defeated Martha Dominguez of Purnell Swett with a 50-second pin.

Southwestern Randolph | Boys’ Basketball | Junior Adkins poured in 20 points as the Cougars secured a 61-48 non-conference victory last week at Chatham Central. It’s a huge point total for the junior considering Southwestern Randolph has struggled at times on the offensive end. Coupled with the previous Friday’s road victory at Randleman (when Adkins had 12 points), that’s back-to-back wins for the Cougars, who improved to 5-4 overall. The result against Chatham Central marked only the third time this season that the Cougars reached the 60-point mark.

Holiday tourneys take new twists for area teams

Area basketball teams will be in holiday tournament action next week, but the format will look different from past years. Teams will be headed to two sites, with a Davidson County vs. Randolph County flavor. “They agreed to do that this year,” Asheboro athletics director Steve Luck said. “It kind of worked out. We thought this would be neat.” The changes stem from sponsorship changes and the renovations at Asheboro’s gym, which had been used for what were basically Randolph County tournaments on back-to-back weeks.
