NCHSAA adjusts postseason slates, delays football, soccer playoffs

Football and soccer state playoffs will be delayed for up to a week for North Carolina High School Athletic Association teams among a list of postseason adjustments announced Wednesday in the wake of Hurricane Helene causing upheaval for teams in the western part of the state. There are also notable changes for girls’ tennis and volleyball. There are no schedule changes in girls’ golf or cheerleading and mostly procedural adjustments for cross country. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Elijah Woodle

Asheboro, football Woodle, a senior receiver and defensive back, is bound to be a key part of the Blue Comets’ offense this year as one of the top returning playmakers. He made a pair of catches in the team’s season-opening victory at Albemarle. Last year, he racked up 10 touchdown receptions to go with a team-high 780 receiving yards. He made a team-best 47 catches. Woodle doesn’t limit his contributions to football for Asheboro. He also plays basketball and competes in track and field. High School Notes: UCA cracks top 10 for Wells Fargo Cup

Uwharrie Charter Academy placed eighth in Class 1A for the Wells Fargo Cup for the 2023-24 school year. The award recognizes schools that achieved the best overall athletic performance within each North Carolina High School Athletic Association classification. The winner in Class 1A was Mount Airy, followed by Swain County, Bishop McGuinness, Christ the King, Mountain Island Charter, Corvian Community and Elkin. UCA moved into the top 10 based on results in spring sports. Prep Roundup: UCA dethrones Cougars in softball; Plus, baseball, soccer, tennis results

ASHEBORO – Uwharrie Charter Academy scored two seven-inning runs to edge host Southwestern Randolph 4-3 in a game to determine the Piedmont Athletic Conference regular-season softball champion Thursday night. At 11-1 in PAC play, the Eagles finished a game ahead of defending champion Southwestern Randolph. It’s the school’s first PAC softball title. Aubrie Kauffman’s two-run bloop single provided the tying and go-ahead runs. UCA pitcher Mollie Bulla struck out 10 batters. Kenzie Hill and Jayla Hurley both scored two runs. High school basketball state regionals, finals move to Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM – The high school basketball state finals are moving to Winston-Salem in March, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association announced Monday. The site will be Joel Coliseum. It will be part of a week-long stretch of games at the coliseum, where regional finals also will be contested for both the East Region and the West Region. During the stretch of March 11-16, the regional games will be held Monday through Thursday (March 11-14), with the title games Friday and Saturday (March 15-16). The winners of regionals contested on Monday and Tuesday will be part of title games Friday.…

TRINITY – Providence Grove won the girls’ and boys’ team championships for cross country in vastly different manners in the Piedmont Athletic Conference on Wheatmore’s 3.1-mile course last week. The girls’ competition marked a tie between Providence Grove and Uwharrie Charter Academy with 34 points apiece using the five scoring runners from each team. The Patriots prevailed because their sixth runner came in 18th compared to UCA’s 30th place for its sixth runner. Randleman | baseball The senior pitcher was stellar in the Class 2-A regional finals, setting the tone by going into the fifth inning of the team’s shutout victory in Game 1 of the series against Community School of Davidson. White struck out six while allowing one hit before he was taken out to preserve his pitch count. White, a left-hander who’s signed to play collegiately for Western Carolina, has had an increased role for the Tigers’ offense as well. He holds the No. 8 spot in the batting order, serving as the designated hitter for games when he’s not pitching.
