Here are some highlights from last week’s spring sports competitions: Softball Kaylee Phillips homered and doubled when host Randleman defeated Eastern Randolph 6-1. Kinzie Ivey pitched six innings and Addyson Dees finished in the circle in Randleman’s 4-3 home victory vs. Montgomery Central. Dees had a double and triple in the Tigers’ 6-3 victory at Wheatmore. ** Southwestern Randolph’s Kami Dunn drove in three runs in a 16-1 victory against visiting Trinity. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Canaan Sheppard

Providence Grove, baseball Sheppard, a senior infielder and pitcher, is a captain for the Patriots. He had productive outings in a pair of non-conference victories last week against Cedar Ridge by 8-3 and Surry Central by 7-2. Sheppard held Cedar Ridge to one earned and two hits in four innings on the mound. In the Surry Central game, he drove in three runs. He previously scored three runs in the season opener. The Patriots were slated to begin Piedmont Athletic Conference play this week.

RANDLEMAN – Randleman’s boys’ basketball team rose to the top among a crowd of contenders in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. The Tigers clinched the regular-season title last week with a pair of victories. Randleman won last week’s showdown at Uwharrie Charter Academy by 77-66 with Tyshaun Goldston’s 23 points and Chase Farlow’s 18 points leading the way. Area schools don’t shift in second NCHSAA league draft

There were no changes involving Randolph County schools in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s second draft of conference alignments. That revised draft was released this week. “What I gather is our schools are pretty happy where they are,” said Stephen Gainey, superintendent of the Randolph County School System. RCSS has six high schools as part of the NCHSAA. Gainey began a term as NCHSAA president last summer, so has a keen eye on the topic. Prep wrestling: Busy Trinity team claims tourney title; Others win in Jet Invitational

Five Trinity wrestlers grabbed individual titles and the Bulldogs were team champions in the Sarah Wilkes Invitational on Saturday in Eden. It was the first of two tournaments in three days that at least some of the Bulldogs participated in. Aiden Burkholder (106 pounds), Stephen Cross (113), Edgar Vasquez (126), Simeon Hammett (132) and Lawson Coltrane (165) were the champs for Trinity, which also had three runners-up.
