Uwharrie Charter Academy, girls’ basketball Gudino has been a key part of UCA’s strong season, particularly with the late-season stretch that has come with several accomplishments for the Eagles. Gudino, who’s one of two seniors on the team, was injured when the season began. Her return to action has added to the team’s success. Last week, UCA won the Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament for the first time. Along the way, the program reached the 20-win level for the first time. ASHEBORO – An undefeated record for Southwestern Randolph’s girls’ basketball team was dashed in the Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament championship game. Uwharrie Charter Academy churned out a 49-43 victory Friday night. It’s the first conference tournament championship for the Eagles, who held the No. 3 seed and avenged to regular-season losses. Navaeh Staples poured in 19 points, Naimah Al-Arif provided 10 points and Lainey Thomas had eight points for visiting UCA (22-7). Uwharrie Charter Academy will send 13 wrestlers to the state tournament after an impressive run through the Class 1A East Regional on Saturday at Rosewood in Goldsboro. UCA’s regional champions were Ayven Virasone Chitavong (106 pounds), Brandon Jordan (144), Lorenzo Alston (157), Aiden Foster (165) and Michael Shropshire (215). Uwharrie Charter Academy, swimming Becker, a Uwharrie Charter Academy junior, had the top finishes among entrants from schools in Randolph County in the swimming and diving state championships. Becker was the runner-up in two events in the Class 1A/2A competition Saturday at Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary. Becker’s times in the 50-yard freestyle (23.83) and 100 freestyle (51.03) were both less than 0.50 seconds out of first place. During the regular season, Becker was undefeated again against Piedmont Athletic Conference competition.
