Prep girls: Cougars collect tourney title with strong defense

ASHEBORO – The Southwestern Randolph girls’ basketball team didn’t need big offensive numbers to win the SportsTone.net Christmas Invitational last week. The Cougars handled things with their defense. So the outcome was three victories in three days in the tournament at Asheboro High School. The Cougars finished their tournament run by controlling West Brunswick 45-30 in Friday night’s title game. West Brunswick was held to 10 second-half points after a 20-20 halftime score. Trinity, boys’ basketball Campbell has been a solid player for the Bulldogs, averaging in double-figure points this season. He was slightly above 10 points per game last season. The senior forward has been a good complement for high-scoring teammate Dominic Payne. His ability to produce offensively has given Trinity some versatility. Campbell is a two-time All-PAC selection in basketball. Campbell has been an all-conference choice in track and field as well. On the football team, he was one of the Bulldogs’ top receivers along with among the leading tackers on defense as a linebacker. ‌

RANDLEMAN – Randleman made perhaps the first big statement in Piedmont Athletic Conference boys’ basketball by knocking off defending champion Eastern Randolph 71-50 last week. The senior lineman was a four-year starter on the offensive line. This year, he was named the Piedmont Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year for his work on the defensive front for the Wildcats, who won their third consecutive conference championship. Twenty of North Carolina’s 27 signees, including Norwood, are listed as early enrollees and another comes as a junior college transfer. Providence Grove, girls’ basketball ‌Ingram had a 25-point outing when Providence Grove won its Piedmont Athletic Conference opener by defeating visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy last week. That continues a nice trend for the Patriots, who held a 6-2 overall record through the end of last week. With that, it meant that Providence Grove had matched the team’s win total for the entire 2022-23 season. Alex Raymundo and Kolby Garner collected the individual titles. “They just wrestled tough,” Randleman coach Andrew Molina said. “I think it being two days was good for them, and getting pins helped.” Raymundo, a 106-pound sophomore, pinned Carson Giannotti of Southern Alamance in 4:35 of the final after an earlier pin and decision. “Just went hard and wrestled,” Raymundo said.…

Prep basketball: PAC play begins with tight girls’ games

Teams began play Friday night in the Piedmont Athletic Conference and there were a couple of close games in girls’ basketball. Defending champion Randleman received 21 points and 10 rebounds from Audra Petty in a 47-41 home victory against Wheatmore. Providence Grove edged visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 59-53 with Brooke Ingram racking up 25 points. Southwestern Randolph had an easy time with visiting Trinity in a 55-4 result.
