Southwestern Randolph  |  volleyball As the Cougars try to repeat as Class 2-A state champions, underclassmen are playing key roles. But Johnston is among the seniors on the roster. Last week, the Cougars won three matches. They took down Providence Grove in a sweep and then won a five-set match against Randleman to capture the Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament.  Then on Saturday, the Cougars won against East Surry in the first round of the state playoffs. TRINITY – Providence Grove won the girls’ and boys’ team championships for cross country in vastly different manners in the Piedmont Athletic Conference on Wheatmore’s 3.1-mile course last week. The girls’ competition marked a tie between Providence Grove and Uwharrie Charter Academy with 34 points apiece using the five scoring runners from each team. The Patriots prevailed because their sixth runner came in 18th compared to UCA’s 30th place for its sixth runner. SOPHIA – Championship night has nearly arrived at Caraway Speedway. Track champions will be determined Saturday night at the speedway. After some weather-related cancelations involving scheduled race nights at the track, this should be a busy regular-season finale. Races are set for Late Models (60 laps), Modifieds (35), Challengers (35), Mini Stocks (20), UCARs (15), Legacy (25), Bootleggers (10) and Enduro (10). Agudelo has been at the back end for the Blue Comets, who’ve recorded eight shutouts this season. He has been credited with 28 saves.
