Prep Roundup: Asheboro has mixed basketball results; Randleman wrestlers excel

Then on Friday, Stanback scored 33 points again, leading Asheboro in a 68-51 victory at Southwestern Randolph ** Trinity’s Dominic Payne scored 28 points in a 56-44 home loss to Oak Grove. Some big scoring outputs were highlights in last week’s limited high school basketball schedule. The biggest of those came in a boys’ game. Dominic Payne of Trinity poured in 53 points in a 78-72 loss at Southern Guilford. That came one night after Payne’s 44 points in a 77-41 whipping of host East Davidson. Asheboro’s Jerquarius Stanback posted 25 points in a 53-39 road victory at Providence Grove. That included Southwestern Randolph and Asheboro splitting a pair of meetings. In the girls’ game, Caressa King’s 20 points led host Southwestern Randolph to a 67-33 triumph against Asheboro. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Sion Murrain

Asheboro, volleyball Murrain compiled 40 kills across three matches last week as the Blue Comets won all three. Asheboro defeated Central Davidson, Southern Guilford and North Davidson. Murrain, a senior outside hitter, leads the team in kills per set and she’s third in digs. The Blue Comets have reached the 10-win mark for the first time in four years. Asheboro entered this week with its second three-match win streak of the year. Murrain also has been a basketball and track and field standout for Asheboro.

Asheboro Hall of Fame grows with Allgood, Moore, two wrestlers, basketball team

ASHEBORO – Dr. Tim Allgood spent 34 years working in various roles for Asheboro City Schools. Now he’s entrenched even more in the district’s history. Allgood, three others and the 1961-62 boys’ basketball team were inducted into the Asheboro Sports Hall of Fame on Friday night. “I think we all enjoy recognition,” Allgood said. Former tennis player and longtime coach Jay Moore and former wrestling standouts Sawyer Davidson and Dalton Cook were also inducted. The school has an induction class every-other year.
