Holiday hoops return to Asheboro after hiatus

(PJ Ward-Brown/Randolph Record) ASHEBORO – Holiday high school basketball action returns to Asheboro after a three-year gap with this week’s 16-team event at Asheboro High School. The tournament includes a girls’ bracket and a boys’ bracket, with five schools from Randolph County in the field. It’s called the SportsTone.net Christmas Invitational. RANDLEMAN – Randleman made perhaps the first big statement in Piedmont Athletic Conference boys’ basketball by knocking off defending champion Eastern Randolph 71-50 last week. Tyshaun Goldston’s 18 points and Greg Price’s 15 points were tops for the Tigers. Timothy Brower had 24 points for Eastern Randolph. Providence Grove, girls’ basketball ‌Ingram had a 25-point outing when Providence Grove won its Piedmont Athletic Conference opener by defeating visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy last week. That continues a nice trend for the Patriots, who held a 6-2 overall record through the end of last week. With that, it meant that Providence Grove had matched the team’s win total for the entire 2022-23 season. Ingram, a senior guard, entered this week with a team-leading 13.3 points per game – or about twice her average for last season. She also had provided 2.4 assists per game. Prep basketball: PAC play begins with tight girls’ games

Teams began play Friday night in the Piedmont Athletic Conference and there were a couple of close games in girls’ basketball. Defending champion Randleman received 21 points and 10 rebounds from Audra Petty in a 47-41 home victory against Wheatmore. Providence Grove edged visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 59-53 with Brooke Ingram racking up 25 points. Southwestern Randolph had an easy time with visiting Trinity in a 55-4 result. Southwestern Randolph, boys’ basketball It has been a challenging start to the season for Southwestern Randolph, but Robertson has given the Cougars chances in games. Last week, the senior had games of 24 points and 19 points. Still, the Cougars absorbed a pair of narrow home losses on consecutive nights to South Davidson (by 42-40) and East Davidson (by 55-52). Robertson is coming off football season when he was a receiver for the Cougars.

Randleman, girls’ basketball Petty is one of the returning players for the Tigers, who had a strong senior class last season. She has been up the task. Petty, a senior guard, posted 24 points against Asheboro and 27 points against Ledford in a pair of games last week. In Randleman’s first three games, Petty has averaged 26.3 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds. She also was credited with 2.7 steals per game. Some big scoring outputs were highlights in last week’s limited high school basketball schedule. The biggest of those came in a boys’ game. Dominic Payne of Trinity poured in 53 points in a 78-72 loss at Southern Guilford. That came one night after Payne’s 44 points in a 77-41 whipping of host East Davidson.
