It’s tight atop the Piedmont Athletic Conference boys’ basketball schedule near the midway mark of the league slate. Trinity suffered its first PAC loss of the season when host Eastern Randolph won 81-77 in Friday night’s game at Ramseur. That was a rematch of last February’s PAC Tournament championship game on the same court, with the Wildcats winning that one as well. Eastern Randolph also entered this week with just one PAC defeat. Southwestern Randolph, girls’ basketball‌ George has been a productive contributor throughout the season for the Cougars, who are one of the area’s top teams in girls’ basketball. She’s a versatile sophomore. The Cougars won two games last week by defeating Eastern Randolph, with George scoring a team-high 15 points, and Wheatmore. That pushed the team’s record to 14-2. Last month, George was named Most Valuable Player of the SportsTone.net Invitational at Asheboro when the Cougars won three games on the way to the holiday tournament championship.

Randleman upended visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 58-43 with 12 points apiece from Audra Petty and Chenleigh Robinson. Next the Tigers had a 58-39 home victory against Providence Grove. RANDLEMAN – Randleman doesn’t have a game on this week’s boys’ basketball schedule. When the Tigers return to play, there’s a showdown looming. On Jan. 23, there’s a clash at Trinity that looms large on the Piedmont Athletic Conference landscape. Last week, Randleman toppled visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 67-44 with Greg Price’s 22 points and Tyshaun Goldston’s 20 points leading the way. Two nights later, the Tigers won 59-48 at home with Goldston supplying 18 points and Price with 12 points. Those results pushed Randleman’s record to 12-5 overall, 5-0 in PAC play. High school basketball state regionals, finals move to Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM – The high school basketball state finals are moving to Winston-Salem in March, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association announced Monday. The site will be Joel Coliseum. It will be part of a week-long stretch of games at the coliseum, where regional finals also will be contested for both the East Region and the West Region. During the stretch of March 11-16, the regional games will be held Monday through Thursday (March 11-14), with the title games Friday and Saturday (March 15-16). ASHEBORO – It was quite a week for Asheboro’s boys’ basketball team. The Blue Comets topped a strong in-county team to wrap up non-conference play and then won its Mid-Piedmont Conference opener. It all added up to a 10-game winning streak entering this week. Asheboro defeated visiting Eastern Randolph 80-75 in a highly anticipated matchup behind Jerquarius Stanback’s 26 points and David Rodriguez’s 25 points. ASHEBORO – The Southwestern Randolph girls’ basketball team didn’t need big offensive numbers to win the SportsTone.net Christmas Invitational last week. The Cougars handled things with their defense. So the outcome was three victories in three days in the tournament at Asheboro High School. The Cougars finished their tournament run by controlling West Brunswick 45-30 in Friday night’s title game. West Brunswick was held to 10 second-half points after a 20-20 halftime score.
