There were an array of results in baseball, softball and girls’ soccer last week for Randolph County teams. Here’s an overview: Baseball Randleman blanked Wheatmore 10-0 at home behind Jake Riddle’s pitching in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. Two nights later, the Tigers won 12-5 at Wheatmore with Tate Andrews driving in five runs and collecting four hits and Braxton Walker posting three runs batted in and three hits. Seth Way struck out 10 batters in 5 2/3 innings. The Eagles posted a 53-21 road victory at Bethany Community last Thursday. That was followed by Friday’s 66-34 triumph at Woods Charter. UCA girls won their opener as well, prevailing 60-48 at Bethany Community behind Nevaeh Staples’ 17 points and Lainey Thomas’ 15 points. A 4-2 victory at fifth-seeded Shelby last Thursday sent Southwestern Randolph (21-3-1) to the third round for the first time in six years. Randleman, boys’ soccer Garcia has been among the leading scorers for the Tigers during their breakthrough season. The Tigers averaged five goals per game during three victories last week. Garcia scored in each of those games for a total of five goals for the week. Garcia is among a group of seniors who’ve helped Randleman rack up a 15-6 record through last week. Before this year, the Tigers had five consecutive seasons without a double-figure win total.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Kaleb Freeman

Southwestern Randolph, boys’ soccer Freeman has been a defender during Southwestern Randolph’s breakthrough season. Entering this week with a 16-2-1 record, the Cougars had more victories than in the last two seasons combined. Freeman has contributed to the play at the defensive end that has helped Southwestern Randolph rack up nine shutouts. He also has registered a pair of goals and an assist.
