Asheboro | girls’ soccer The Blue Comets posted three goals last week in two victories in the Class 3-A state playoffs. Moody scored all of those goals. Asheboro beat Foard 2-1 and then topped Hibriten 1-0. Those results allowed the Blue Comets to advance to this week’s third round. Moody, a junior, is among the top three on the team in goals and assists.

Prep Roundup: Soccer teams start state playoffs strong at home

Asheboro and Uwharrie Charter Academy won opening-round games in the state playoffs for girls’ soccer Monday night. Asheboro defeated visiting Foard 2-1 behind two goals from Tess Moody in Class 3-A. Natalie Flores had an assist and goalkeeper Sarah Allred made nine saves. UCA topped Piedmont Community 7-0 in Class 1-A, with Ava Cugino posting two goals and one assist, Kendall Jarrell scoring twice and Chloe Douglas, Kaylen Trucks and Ivy Redding all providing one goal. Prep Roundup: UCA pair takes second in 1-A tennis; Providence Grove sparkles in softball

The Uwharrie Charter Academy doubles team of Joseph Phetmixay and Drew Auman ended up as state runner-up in Class 1-A boys’ tennis at Cary Tennis Park. Phetmixay and Auman won two matches before they were denied in the final. The Bishop McGuinness pairing of Luca Pestana and Timothy Hackman captured the title by winning 6-1, 6-4. For the Villains, it was the fourth time the school has produced a doubles state champion pair, though the first since 2014. Asheboro | track and field Lovingood-Smith won three individual events as the Blue Comets were overwhelming winners in the Mid-Piedmont Conference championship last week at Oak Grove. Lovingood-Smith, a senior, won the high jump with an effort of 4 feet, 8 inches, claimed the long jump at 15-7 and captured the triple jump at 36-6. This was all part of Asheboro’s title effort. The Blue Comets rang up 157 points compared to runner-up Central Davidson’s 93. Asheboro also had an individual winner in the shot put with Morgan Williams’ toss of 29-4½.
