ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Noelle Swaim

Providence Grove, girls’ soccer, tennis Swaim participated in three sports for the Patriots and made big impacts. Last fall, she was a member of the Piedmont Athletic Conference champion girls’ tennis team. That included a spot on the All-PAC team. As a senior, she was part of the conference’s third-place doubles tandem. Swaim played key roles for Providence Grove’s girls’ soccer team during the spring. State championships: Asheboro’s Everhart excels in indoor meet; UCA’s Becker places in swimming

WINSTON-SALEM – Lance Everhart of Asheboro placed third in three events in the Class 3-A indoor track and field state championships Saturday at JDL Fast Track. Everhart cleared 6 feet, 4 inches in the high jump, posted a mark of 13-6 in the pole vault and leaped 22-3 in the long jump. Kai Matthews of Asheboro was fifth in the long jump (21-6). On the girls’ side, Jalaya Showers had the 11th-best time in the 55 dash at 7.33 seconds. Wheatmore, girls’ swimming Hall was part of victories in four events as the Warriors won last week’s Piedmont Athletic Conference championships. She won the 100-meter butterfly, 100 backstroke and took part in two first-place relays in competition at High Point Swim Club. Her backstroke time of 1 minute, 21.72 seconds reflected nearly a 17-second winning margin. Wheatmore was the clear team winner with 84 points to 54 for second-place Providence Grove among the five teams that were entered. (Randolph Record file photo) CARY – Freshman Megan Becker of Asheboro was the runner-up in the Class 3-A girls’ 100-yard freestyle in the state championships Saturday at the Triangle Aquatic Center. Becker finished the race in 53.57 seconds behind Orange’s Katie Belle Sikes, who set a Class 3-A state meet record of 49.45. Becker was also fourth in the 200 freestyle in 1:56.40. The Eagles were at home as the East Region’s top seed, defeating Pender 66-18 and North East Carolina Prep 49-28. That sends UCA to Wednesday’s action against Pamlico, with Thomasville and host Rosewood also meeting in the third round at that site.
