ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jonah Campbell

Southwestern Randolph, baseball Campbell was the winning pitcher when Southwestern Randolph defeated Randleman last week to end a long losing streak in the series. Campbell, also a senior infielder, has been a contributor at the plate as well. Campbell, who was an All-Piedmont Athletic Conference selection last year, has committed to play collegiately for Brevard. The Cougars had five victories through March, putting them in position to potentially reach at least a 10-win season for the first time since the abbreviated 2021 season.

Lorenzo Alston of Uwharrie Charter Academy came close to winning a national tournament. (Randolph Record) Lorenzo Alston of Uwharrie Charter Academy finished as a runner-up in the National High School Coaches Association’s national tournament during the weekend at Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Va. The three-time state champion had the highest finish of any North Carolina entrant in all of the boys’ high school divisions. Alston, a North Carolina State commit, competed in the 145-pound division for juniors. Four Cougars confirm football plans

ASHEBORO — Four football players from Southwestern Randolph intend to play collegiately – and some of them will continue to be teammates. They made those plans clear with Friday’s ceremony in the school gym. Julian Mosley, Easton Gravely and Owen Whelan have committed to play for Guilford College, a Division III program in Greensboro. Noah Stills is heading to Anderson University, a Division III school in Indiana. Whelan played as a fullback and linebacker for the Cougars. Mosley spent time as a receiver and defensive back. Three schools from Randolph County would stay together in the latest realignment draft Eastern Randolph, Southwestern Randolph and Uwharrie Charter Academy remain together in the latest version of North Carolina High School Athletic Association conference realignment proposals, but it’s down to a six-school league. Carrboro is no longer grouped in that conference, which also would include North Moore, Northwood and Jordan-Matthews. UCA doesn’t play football.
