Here's a look at some of last week's area high school sports highlights: The Asheboro boys’ basketball team avenged a loss to Randleman by securing a 58-36 home victory with Jerquarius Stanback posting 18 points. Stanback had 18 again when the Blue Comets defeated visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 70-33 later in the week. ** Dominic Payne’s 32 points boosted Trinity past East Davidson 73-56. Payne’s 34 points vs. visiting Oak Grove weren’t enough in a 76-67 loss. ** Parker Kines had 22 points in Wheatmore’s 53-50 loss at Ledford. He posted 13 points in a 58-37 setback to North Davidson.…

A 4-2 victory at fifth-seeded Shelby last Thursday sent Southwestern Randolph (21-3-1) to the third round for the first time in six years. Fernando Hernandez had a goal and two assists in the Shelby game. David Lopez Dominguez, Jonathan Lopez and Joe Avina also scored for the Cougars. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Coley Shiflet

Southwestern Randolph, volleyball Shiflet’s splendid volleyball career for the Cougars wrapped up during the weekend. She has been part of conference championships during her time with Southwestern Randolph. She also played a role for the Cougars when they won the Class 2-A state championship in 2021. She was Most Valuable Player of the championship match as a sophomore. Shiflet excelled around the court, but she perhaps made her biggest impact as a defensive specialist. She has committed to play collegiately for Houston.

Southwestern Randolph, boys’ soccer Freeman has been a defender during Southwestern Randolph’s breakthrough season. Entering this week with a 16-2-1 record, the Cougars had more victories than in the last two seasons combined. Freeman has contributed to the play at the defensive end that has helped Southwestern Randolph rack up nine shutouts. He also has registered a pair of goals and an assist.
