Asheboro radio icon Reid dies at age 62

ASHEBORO – Larry Reid, a radio personality in Randolph County for more than three decades, died Saturday at age 62. He spent most of his career at WKXR and WZOO, creating an identity on the air and also serving as station manager. He was named honorary mayor of Asheboro the day prior to his passing. He succumbed to an undisclosed illness. A prayer vigil was held last week in Asheboro a few days prior to his death. Asheboro golfer places in North Carolina Super Seniors

MOORESVILLE – Asheboro’s Charlie Parks finished tied for 12th place in the 70-plus division of the North Carolina Super Senior Championship. Parks shot rounds of 77 and 73 for a 6-over total in competition conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association on Sept. 6-7 at Mooresville Golf Club. There were 47 entrants in the 70-plus division, which was won by Raleigh’s Dee Blankenhorn at 6-under (68, 70). He won by five shots on Robert Desjardins of Matthews. Todd Hendley of Columbus was the winner in the 65-and-older class with 7-under 137.

Prep football: Randleman, Eastern Randolph cruise; Trinity pulls out victory

RANDLEMAN – John Kirkpatrick threw two touchdown passes and ran for another touchdown in undefeated Randleman’s 53-14 trouncing of visiting Asheboro in Friday night’s non-conference football game. Edison Hernandez scored on two touchdown runs and Randleman (5-0) never trailed. Kirkpatrick completed 19 of 28 throws for 310 yards. Tyshaun Goldston made a touchdown catch and racked up 174 receiving yards on eight receptions. Asheboro (1-3) scored on Quincy Lee’s 2-run and Hamza Khan’s 68-yard pass connection to Ben Luck. Caraway Speedway aims to rev up again after weather wipes out slate

SOPHIA – The season is winding down at Caraway Speedway and then last Saturday night’s card was called off because of concerns involving inclement weather. That could complicate matters as the track tries to get caught up. For instance, UCARs was set to have two features because of an earlier postponement involving that division. That brings the Fall Showdown this coming Saturday night, with racing slated for Challengers, 602 Modifieds, Mini Stocks, UCARs and Bootleggers. There will be two 15-lap features in UCARs. Johnson to retire as county manager
