Asheboro pizza restaurant could open in spring

ASHEBORO — The Pizza Inn project in Asheboro seems back on track. The opening of the restaurant at 1216 East Dixie Dr. could be coming soon. Progress has been made at the site of the former home to Uptown Charlie. The Texas-based pizza chain had dubbed the Asheboro location for the first reveal of its new design. While that was intended to happen by late 2022, the marketing drum for the restaurant has begun to beat again. Asheboro’s Pizza Inn appears at least about a month away from opening. ASHEBORO — The Randolph County Board of Commissioners met Monday, March 6, with various funding requests on the agenda for potential action. The board first approved a contract amendment with Mediko for Medical Assisted Therapy in the Randolph County Detention Center. “This is the use of medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, which is effective in the treatment of opioid use disorders and can help some people to sustain recovery,” said Chief Deputy Aundrea Azelton. “Funding would provide the service of two MAT nurses to assist in the administration of the program.” The medications included being Suboxone, which…

Last week, Randolph Electric Membership Corporation (REMC) officials presented state and local fire representatives with checks to assist with purchasing new fire engines. Eastern Randolph, girls’ basketball Eastern Randolph had a breakthrough season in girls’ basketball, and Purdue, a senior, played a significant role. The team secured its first winning season in six years. Purdue was one of three seniors on the Eastern Randolph roster. She was the starting center. The Wildcats reached the third round of the Class 1-A state playoffs. They finished with a 19-8 record.

New male lion officially arrives at NC Zoo

ASHEBORO — A new lion residing at the North Carolina Zoo is available to be seen by the public as of last week. All 400 pounds of him. The 3-year-old male lion, Haji, came from Audobon Zoo in New Orleans. He’ll be a companion for Mekita, 13. Haji and Mekita are on a rotating schedule where guests can see them in their habitat. Guests should be able to spot Haji by his growing mane, which is mohawk style. His mane will continue to grow and darken as he ages. “We’re excited our guests now get to see Haji more often,”…

Southwestern Randolph, girls’ basketball Small had a couple of solid games last week in the Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament. She’s a senior captain on a team that has several key underclassmen. Small, a forward, provided nine points when the Cougars defeated Trinity 47-46 in the PAC Tournament quarterfinals. She led Southwestern Randolph with 14 points in a 75-49 semifinal loss to Eastern Randolph.
