RANDLEMAN – Randleman doesn’t have a game on this week’s boys’ basketball schedule. When the Tigers return to play, there’s a showdown looming. On Jan. 23, there’s a clash at Trinity that looms large on the Piedmont Athletic Conference landscape. Last week, Randleman toppled visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 67-44 with Greg Price’s 22 points and Tyshaun Goldston’s 20 points leading the way. High school basketball state regionals, finals move to Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM – The high school basketball state finals are moving to Winston-Salem in March, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association announced Monday. The site will be Joel Coliseum. It will be part of a week-long stretch of games at the coliseum, where regional finals also will be contested for both the East Region and the West Region. During the stretch of March 11-16, the regional games will be held Monday through Thursday (March 11-14), with the title games Friday and Saturday (March 15-16). He has been a regular qualifier for the state tournament during his career with the Eagles. He has moved up to the middle weights, often competing at 138 pounds. ASHEBORO – It was quite a week for Asheboro’s boys’ basketball team. The Blue Comets topped a strong in-county team to wrap up non-conference play and then won its Mid-Piedmont Conference opener. It all added up to a 10-game winning streak entering this week. Randleman, which has ruled the league in recent seasons, is the lone undefeated team in PAC play entering this week. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Kynnedi Routh

 Wheatmore, girls’ basketball ‌Routh has been a contributor for Wheatmore during what has been a bounce-back season for the Warriors. Wheatmore placed third in the Ledford Christmas Tournament last week. Routh, a junior, has been among the consistent scorers for the Warriors, who’ve had a relatively balanced attack. In the tournament, Wheatmore won 51-26 vs. host Ledford before falling 51-41 to East Davidson. The Warriors capped their tournament participation by defeating West Davidson 53-32. With a 9-4 record entering January, the Warriors have matched last season’s win total. Routh also played on the school’s volleyball team.

ASHEBORO – The Asheboro boys’ basketball team breezed through three games in the SportsTone.net Christmas Invitational on its home court. The tournament didn’t provide much variety for the Blue Comets, who defeated teams it had already defeated a total of five times earlier this season. The title game Friday night at least proved to be a rubber match, with Asheboro trouncing Randleman 63-41 after the teams split two earlier meetings.
