Prep Roundup: Asheboro has mixed basketball results; Randleman wrestlers excel

Then on Friday, Stanback scored 33 points again, leading Asheboro in a 68-51 victory at Southwestern Randolph ** Trinity’s Dominic Payne scored 28 points in a 56-44 home loss to Oak Grove. Asheboro, boys basketball ‌Stanback was one of the leading players for the Blue Comets during their conference championship campaign from last season. He has started this season with a series of strong outings for Asheboro. The senior post player has scored 26, 25 and 29 points in three victories for the Blue Comets. Beginning this week, Asheboro plays its next six opponents against Randolph County teams prior to a holiday tournament.

Some big scoring outputs were highlights in last week’s limited high school basketball schedule. The biggest of those came in a boys’ game. Dominic Payne of Trinity poured in 53 points in a 78-72 loss at Southern Guilford. That came one night after Payne’s 44 points in a 77-41 whipping of host East Davidson. Asheboro’s Jerquarius Stanback posted 25 points in a 53-39 road victory at Providence Grove. MOUNT AIRY — Eastern Randolph’s football season ended in a familiar fashion. The Wildcats lost to Mount Airy. For the second season in a row, Mount Air defeated Eastern Randolph in the Class 1-A West Region semifinals. Friday night’s 42-21 outcome spelled the end for the third-seeded Wildcats (12-2), who had a 12-game winning streak end. A year ago, the season ended with a home defeat. HOLLY SPRINGS – The 2024 Coastal Plain League All-Star Game will be held in Forest City. Eastern Randolph, football Taylor has been one of the main playmakers for the Wildcats during their Piedmont Athletic Conference championship season. Taylor is a receiver who has been one of the primary targets for quarterback Carter Revelle, who has thrown for 30 touchdowns. The Wildcats (12-1) have won three games in the Class 1-A state playoffs at home. Next is Friday night’s West Region semifinal at Mount Airy. Taylor also was a key player on Eastern Randolph’s state finalist boys’ basketball team during the last school year.

Randleman, football The senior running back ran for more than 1,000 yards for the Tigers. He was a big contributor to a high-powered offense. Hernandez reached the 100-yard mark on the ground in half of the team’s 12 games. He scored touchdowns on 13 rushes. Hernandez was the man running threat for the Tigers with no other player on the team reaching the 200-yard mark for the season. Randleman finished the season with a 10-2 record.
