Asheboro’s Davidson takes second in N.C. Amateur

JEFFERSON – Asheboro golfer Sam Davidson has made a habit of runner-up finishes. Davidson tied for second place in the North Carolina Amateur, a four-round event that ended Sunday. The winner was UNC Wilmington golfer Walker Isley of Oak Island. Isley shot a 3-under-par 281 at Jefferson Landing. Davidson, a rising senior at Guilford College, and Winston-Salem’s Davis Womble, a former college golfer for Wake Forest, finished at 1-under. Carter shot rounds of 70 and 77 for 3-over-par 147 last week at Pinehurst No. 6. He was behind only Mitchell’s Connor Warren, the defending champion who checked in at 11-under 133 with rounds of 65 and 68. Asheboro, baseball Gore has been a steady performer for the Blue Comets on the baseball field this spring. He shares the team lead with six home runs, and he’s second among the Blue Comets with 18 runs scored. Gore is a catcher and utility player heading to Belmont Abbey for college. Asheboro won four of its last five games entering the Class 3-A state playoffs this week. Gore also played football for the Blue Comets.

Numerous schools have stellar results for individuals ASHEBORO – Asheboro’s boys’ and girls’ track and field teams were superior in the Randolph County Championships on Tuesday. But the Blue Comets had plenty of company from entrants from other schools when it came to special individual performances. On the girls’ side, Brecken Snotherly of Eastern Randolph won four events on the track and Randleman’s Gracie Beane was strong in field events. Asheboro’s Jalaya Showers, Wheatmore’s Ariel Martin and Trinity’s Kensley Fox also won multiple individual events. Asheboro, girls’ soccer Flores has been a big part of Asheboro’s offense, and that has helped the Blue Comets in their first two Mid-Piedmont Conference games. A senior forward and striker, Flores has provided five goals and a team-leading five assists. She has regularly been one of Asheboro’s top threats. This continues a trend because she was second on the team in both goals and assists last year. Asheboro pulled out a pair of victories in Mid-Piedmont Conference play last week.
