Blue Comets show different traits early in boys’ basketball season

MT. HERMON – It looks different and might feel different for the Asheboro boys’ basketball team. But the Blue Comets have been winning nonetheless in what might be a season in transition. Following a 23-win season, coach Brian Nance said he knew there would be different challenges. “They’re still cutting their teeth a little bit,” Nance said of his team. Some of the high-scoring outcomes might not be as frequent for the Blue Comets, who entered this week with a 5-1 record. Prep football: Randleman, E. Randolph stay unbeaten with late-game drama

Staying undefeated in high school football meant dramatics for Randleman and Eastern Randolph in Friday night’s games. Randleman needed a fourth-quarter comeback and overtime to withstand host Asheboro. Eastern Randolph scored the on the final play to top visiting Central Davidson. Randleman 34, Asheboro 27, OT: Brayden Gladden scored on a touchdown run in overtime and the Tigers (5-0) began the extra session with points. Asheboro, football Woodle, a senior receiver and defensive back, is bound to be a key part of the Blue Comets’ offense this year as one of the top returning playmakers. He made a pair of catches in the team’s season-opening victory at Albemarle. Last year, he racked up 10 touchdown receptions to go with a team-high 780 receiving yards. He made a team-best 47 catches. Woodle doesn’t limit his contributions to football for Asheboro. He also plays basketball and competes in track and field.
