RANDLEMAN – Randleman made perhaps the first big statement in Piedmont Athletic Conference boys’ basketball by knocking off defending champion Eastern Randolph 71-50 last week. Tyshaun Goldston’s 18 points and Greg Price’s 15 points were tops for the Tigers. Timothy Brower had 24 points for Eastern Randolph. Prep basketball: PAC play begins with tight girls’ games

Teams began play Friday night in the Piedmont Athletic Conference and there were a couple of close games in girls’ basketball. Defending champion Randleman received 21 points and 10 rebounds from Audra Petty in a 47-41 home victory against Wheatmore. Providence Grove edged visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 59-53 with Brooke Ingram racking up 25 points. Southwestern Randolph had an easy time with visiting Trinity in a 55-4 result. Here's a look at some of last week's area high school sports highlights: The Asheboro boys’ basketball team avenged a loss to Randleman by securing a 58-36 home victory with Jerquarius Stanback posting 18 points. Stanback had 18 again when the Blue Comets defeated visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 70-33 later in the week. ** Dominic Payne’s 32 points boosted Trinity past East Davidson 73-56. Some big scoring outputs were highlights in last week’s limited high school basketball schedule. The biggest of those came in a boys’ game. Dominic Payne of Trinity poured in 53 points in a 78-72 loss at Southern Guilford. That came one night after Payne’s 44 points in a 77-41 whipping of host East Davidson. Asheboro’s Jerquarius Stanback posted 25 points in a 53-39 road victory at Providence Grove.
