Asheboro, boys’ basketball Walker has been one of the area’s best perimeter shooters and that’s a big plus for the Blue Comets. The senior guard has increased his production during his senior season. He has been an ideal threat to combine with the interior presence of teammate Jerquarius Stanback. Walker averages more than 15 points per game. He has been connecting on about three 3-point shots in each game. He’s shooting 83 percent on free throws. Prep Boys: Randleman Tigers stay on right track

RANDLEMAN – Randleman doesn’t have a game on this week’s boys’ basketball schedule. When the Tigers return to play, there’s a showdown looming. On Jan. 23, there’s a clash at Trinity that looms large on the Piedmont Athletic Conference landscape. Last week, Randleman toppled visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 67-44 with Greg Price’s 22 points and Tyshaun Goldston’s 20 points leading the way. Two nights later, the Tigers won 59-48 at home with Goldston supplying 18 points and Price with 12 points. Those results pushed Randleman’s record to 12-5 overall, 5-0 in PAC play. ASHEBORO – It was quite a week for Asheboro’s boys’ basketball team. The Blue Comets topped a strong in-county team to wrap up non-conference play and then won its Mid-Piedmont Conference opener. It all added up to a 10-game winning streak entering this week. Asheboro defeated visiting Eastern Randolph 80-75 in a highly anticipated matchup behind Jerquarius Stanback’s 26 points and David Rodriguez’s 25 points. The game pitted last season’s regular-season champions from the Mid-Piedmont Conference and Piedmont Athletic Conference. It was the first time the Blue Comets and Wildcats met in four years. The Wildcats (5-1) also returned a blocked punt for a touchdown. Quarterback Carter Revelle ran for a touchdown from 16 yards out to begin the scoring. Eastern Randolph goes for its third consecutive PAC championship. The Wildcats’ biggest challenge might come from Randleman. Those teams conveniently meet in the regular-season finale Oct. 27 at Randleman. There’s plenty to sort through prior to that potential showdown. Asheboro turns to Eastern Randolph alum as volleyball coach

ASHEBORO – Kelly Smith has been hired as the new volleyball coach at Asheboro. Smith will be the team’s third volleyball coach in three years. She replaces Kim Black, whose third stint as head coach of the program lasted just one year. Smith, an Eastern Randolph alum, was coach of her alma mater’s volleyball team in 2017 and 2018 before going to Southern Guilford for three years. She spent time as volleyball and girls’ basketball coach at Southern Guilford, though without a winning season.
